I've just bought a skateboard, my son has got into scooters so rather than stand in the skate park I thought I'd try and join in. I haven't used one since about 1998, I was a keen skater in the early 90s but it's going to be like starting from scratch again. I've also bought a helmet and pads, would rather look like an idiot than kill myself. I'll let you know when I break my wrist/leg
Also, there are some ridiculously cheap good quality skateboards available now! For example this one:

When I got my first skateboard in 1990 the going rate was about Ā£125 for a decent one, that price point was consistent until I stopped in the late 90s. You can still spend a couple of hundred quid on one if you buy all the bits separately, but there are some absolute bargains for complete ones from reputable brands (Santa Cruz, Alien Workshop, Element, Blind etc.) The one I bought was under Ā£50!

My Daughter has Recently acquired a Stihl Ride on Mower for where we live ā¦enjoying that piece of kit along with strimmer

Good stuff Ed, I was also bang into my skating back in the day mate, First deck was a Santa Cruz Rob Roskopp Eye , then a Gonz and finally a New Deal Danny Sergeant (which I still own with Gullwing trucks and Toxic wheels
).However ! A word of warning lol........... about 10 years ago after hitting 40 I decided I wanted a new rider deck - plugged for a new style Santa Cruz deck and built it up how I wanted it. Took it out on the street and enjoyed skating whilst the youngest was riding her bike for a good few months - all good fun........
And then.......... a lad in work in his late 20's said he was going to RampWorx indoor skate park in Liverpool so I decided to tag along (you can see were this is going lol). Went a few times, built up confidence and was really pleased with myself - proper enjoying it, all good, but..... I'd forgotten how to fall..... 4th time we went there, mid session.... kick turn on the mini, trucks hung up on the coping, I rotated, board did not and instead of dropping to my knees and sliding I stupidly put my foot out, did an unorthodox splits and promptly ripped the ligaments in both knees
Both legs strapped up like Robocop for months with loads of physio and them "dialling-in" more movement to the robot legs each week until they could come off - took months to fully recover but thankfully no op required. Full recovery and I still have a roll around on my deck but no more skate parks, haha !Anyways, just thought I'd give you a cautionary tale mate lol ! I've been in the old school BMX scene for nearly 20 years now and the amount of 40 to 50 somethings who've injured themselves on outings and gatherings is unbelievable !

Ah that doesn't sound fun! The plan is just to cruise around and not try anything too fancy or dangerous but as you say once the confidence kicks in I'm sure that will be out the window 
Funny you should mention your first deck, I've been trying to remember which ones I had over the years too, but this was my first for my birthday in 1990. The original is long gone (gave it to a friend from memory) but by chance I stumbled across the reissue when it came out in 2012 and had to grab one. I rode it a few times then but couldn't get on with the shape of it, so I just keep it as a momento now. I'm getting on better with the more modern shape of the Alien Workshop one, but that was a bit of a nostalgia purchase too, I remember seeing that design in skate shops back in the mid 90s.

Just imagine running at full belt taking off into the air & one of your legs decides to stay on the ground, OUCH is not the word I'd use.Lol mate no worries - I can laugh about it now
