Anybody else into Metal Detecting on here?

I go searching my local farmland for lost hidden treasure :D Theres loads of it out there!!!!!

I've found Roman and Medieval silver coins and artefacts. Not got any Gold yet though :(

Just wondered if any of you lot go detecting?

Below are couple of pictures of my Roman Silver coins. The earliest was minted in 32BC and is a Legionary Roman silver denarius of Marc Antony minted with Cleopatra's silver :D

Thats quality Neil! Ive never been myself but I could definitely see the attraction. Do you sell your finds? Are these coins worth much?

Do you need a decent metal detector to make finds? :D

I never sell my stuff, i couldn't bring myself to do it

The roman silver coins on average are worth between £30 -£50 Though some are worth alot more upto £1000 each. One of mine is worth about £600 :D Some medieval, Saxon and Viking coins are worth tens of thousands of pounds.

Its great when you go out....Its like Christmas.....You never know what you are going to dig up next! It could be a shot gun cartridge which you throw in the bin....or a rare coin worth 50 Grand

You can buy a decent second hand detector for about £250 upwards. The one i use is top of the range and i bought new for £1299 (see link) but its already paid for itself from what i've found 3 times over.

If you ever consider doing it....Give me a shout and i'll recommend you good machine, and point you in direction of your local club

Yeah definitely! Its got to be an ideal retirement hobby. I hope to have completed my carded run by then too! Lol.

Are you likely to find some thing near enough every time you go out or is it quite rare that you find coins etc?

Its quite topical at the moment, there seems to be more and more people having a go. Theres been a few big finds too! 8)

When ever you go out you will find coins from one period or another, the tricky part is finding the very old coins...thats when you have got to hit the books and old maps and find the medieval/Roman/Saxon/Viking history around you. Once you've done a bit of history and you've selected a nice location, its then time to go door knocking on farmers doors and sweet talk your way onto their land (A bottle of Whiskey usually does the trick, with a promise you'll show them your finds and build up a history of their land)

Also i'd better mention if you find anything of significant value....then its split equally with the landowner
So when you do finally get land to detect on.....its then hit or miss whether you find the good stuff.
When you do get lucky and start to find medieval/roman/saxon or viking treasures then you just keep working away at the land.....and everytime the farmer ploughs the fields, more and more goodies come to the surface :D

So eventually you'll end up with many different farms to detect on, and some will be really productive and some will be not so good.

At the end of the day once you've got your detector and stuff....its then all down to luck!!!

The latest big hoard found was worth £3.3 million.....not a bad days work
