Traditionally? Typical fair. Very heavily influenced by our English roots so Sunday Roasts, Sausages and Mash, Lamb cutlets, Meat pies and Fish and Chips would be the type of food considered traditional.
In recent years tastes have turn to more international flavours with more immigrants coming from different parts of the world and bringing their traditional foods.
1970's Australia the most adventurous people got was Chinese and Italian which was heavily altered to appease western tastes, these days there's a huge variety on offer and Melbourne in particular has a great culture of different foods from around the world. Authentic Vietnamese, Indian, Thai, Lebanese, Turkish, Greek, Italian, French and more all on offer.
Aussies are finally starting to realise we are spoilt when it comes to fresh produce like Seafood, Beef and Lamb. Kangaroo and Crocodile are also becoming regular dishes in Restaurants.
We used to live in an area with a large Vietnamese and Chinese community which was awesome when it came to choice of eating out, we moved about two years ago to the outskirts of Melb where the choice of restaurants and takeaway joints is severely lacking. Oh well back to Fish and Chips and soggy fake Pizzas.
I guess if you had to say if their was a style of food that would mostly sum us up it would be cooking the **** out of everything on a BBQ, as soon a summer arrives the smell of BBQ's in the air is ever present.
