Despite being a fellow northern monkey Mike and I have had a disagreement. The disagreement is over whether or not mash goes with red sauce. I am an advocate of the red sauce thing :D Mike is not

Frankly i'm amazed. Mike's even more northern than I am! You'll be telling me you don't like parched peas next!

So here, just for you Mike - tonight's tea. You'll have to forgive the slap-happy serving. It kind of looks like Mr Potatoe Mash has had his brains blown out by a fish. But I can tell you, this was bloomin lovely :p

The mash on the plate looks uneven,
The tommy sauce, oh my god! am I believin!
Now further disturbed Fish & CHIPS...not mash,
I'm now Gipping...must dash!
Red sauce on that ...your a Heathen

So not converted you there then? I gave him a smiley face and everything ....

*This sort of thing would not be tolerated on RS*

Now your takin the peas :D

I'm afraid I couldn't eat red sauce on mash mate

Just to make you happy though, I am not averse to Wigan butties, :D

Do you mean a pie barm or Wigan kebab? Now you're talking :D

...I draw the line at 'pea wet'

With mash..it's gotta be gravy. However, I HAVE eaten it with ketchup and it's not as bad as it sounds/looks. Definitely not a patch on gravy though (and accompanied by onions and sausages..naturally).

Sausage and mash and onion gravy, oh yes we are back on track there

Pie butties are ace....what the hell is Pea wet??im afraid to ask :?

Well my mental age has a six in it

...it's 6

Pea wet is pea juice on chips. Yes, you read that right

Pea juice.....on Chips,!,! :?

A more disturbing northern delicacy is 'babby's head'. That (i think) is steak pudding with pea juice or gravy. ****ing disgusting!

I had chips, babbies yed and gravy last night. Chippies nowadays don't know what pea wet and bean wet are these days, and would look at you funny if you asked for it. I only know of one local chippy where you can still get smacks. All are dying traditions around my part. Still 4 pie shops per person. :D

Don't mind sauce on mash so long as it's not mixed in.

Welcome to Wigan!! (i'm not from there. I just work there by the way) :?

Wigan is like Britain was in the 1970's. Very insular place. Outsiders are not welcome

You go to a chippy in Wigan and you can still but all these weird things. Smacks are widely available as far north as Standish (3 miles from Wigan town centre). Pea wet, babbies yed. I'm pretty sure if you asked they would sell you the shitty bits from the bottom of the fryer.

Occasionally though, and it is occasionally, Wigan throws up something completely genius. Vindaloo pie! To die for :D

Has to be gravy with Mash I'm afraid, if a drop of the red stuff hits my mash I can't eat it.

I'm still getting over the fact you blokes have Chinese takeaway shops that also double as Fish and Chippies.

Worst of the culinary delights we have here is called a pie floater, I'll let the picture do the talking :?

Yes, that's a meat pie in a bowl of pea soup.

OMG............I hope it tastes better than it looks and sounds. A pie floater (The word 'Floater' associated with anything culinary is not a good idea)

Vindaloo pie, never heard of it, sounds interesting although I don't think my stomach could take it.
