I recently bought a graded luke x wing figure which was perfect apart from the helmet had gone a different colour to the other white parts. Having checked some of the other ones for sale on ebay seems this is a regular thing with this figure? Anyone else had a similar issue?

Many plastics discolour over time, and it is most obvious on white plastic. Unfortunately this is one of the issues with grading, the figure can deteriorate after grading rendering the grade wrong.

It isn't the grading, the grade would have been correct at the time it was graded, however plastic can degrade or discolour over time. Direct sunlight if the case is not uv protective for example could cause the plastic to discolour yellow much like my Luke Stormtroopers legs and arms have gone.

???

It's just an acrylic case they put the figure in you know, it's not entombed with a sprinkle of magic..

The grading doesn't "make the colour go wrong", Edd is just pointing out that all toys can degrade over time, even ones in acrylic boxes. You can't stop a figure from becoming dust or gloop, you can only slow it down..and really, the cases aren't even designed to do that. They really only offer the figures some protection while providing the owner with a display case - that's it.

Most graded figures will eventually be in a worse state than when they were originally graded, you have to look at the score as a snapshot in time of how the figure looked when AFA printed the label- nothing more.

Bubbles will go yellow, paint on the hands and face easily transfers to the inside of bubbles and acrylic cases, weapons and tape can shake loose from carded figures and yes loose figures that were once perfectly white can yellow too.

You can but the cases slightly thicker with uv protection but I've never seen one yet. Seems pointless me buying them graded if theyr gonna discolour anyway :(

You know, I never thought you would get there (sorry!) but the sooner you realise the above the better. Enjoy collecting loose figures, but don't overpay for each and every one of them by buying graded. Especially when the only thing you are getting for your money is an acrylic box and an opinion!

To use another example from cartography a map is only as accurate as the day it was drawn - anything can happen with the passage of time.
