latest film/ dvd you have seen

Watched GoTG2 last night. Really enjoyed it- very funny- they really went for the comedy this time. Thought the story was a touch weak though and the FX at times were really over the top and almost unwatchable (like Transformers). That said, thoroughly enjoyable. Shame there was no Star Wars trailer though...

Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

If you liked the first one you'll like this one. Pretty easy going film that doesn't take itself too seriously. A few genuinely funny bits. Plot has a few big holes in it but it easily kills two hours.

Watched Arrival last night, very disappointed. I was hoping for some Independence Day style action, it's just a bloody boring soppy love film. It's also guilty of one of my movie pet-hates, a completely unsuitable home audio mix. You know, the films where you need the volume on 100 to hear what the hell anybody is saying and then BANG an explosion (or in this films case the aliens talking) that breaks your TVs speakers and shakes the house down. Sod off, I just want to watch a film at one volume.

Hi Edd,
Totally agree, bought this as a limited steelbook, watched it on the Friday night, sold it on ebay the following Friday fir the same price I paid for it.
Really poor, could have been so much better.
PS: good to meet you on Sunday at ff.

PASSENGERS
I think that pedestrian would have been a better title.
Pretty to look at, took ages to get going, and when it did it was over, very thin on story.
Oh well my wife enjoyed it, possibly for Chris Pratt!?!

Alien Covenant,

It's a bit hard to say what I made of it, at least without giving away too much of the plot. It's a dam sight better than Prometheus. It's more of a return to the suspense "Alien" type film than the shoot 'em up that was "Aliens". There are, obviously, violent deaths but the film trades more on the edge of your seat factor than the 'OMG look what happened to him/her". It makes a lot more sense than Prometheus as well, although the characters are all a bit one dimensional. Maybe that's harsh, it's just that there are 15 of them and the vast majority I couldn't even tell you the names of and I watched the film 12 hours ago. A few less characters and bit more depth to each might have been better.
There are a few plot holes and bits where people just do daft things seemingly so they can put themselves in a position to be killed, but then with this sort of film that's probably to be expected. The original score is used and i'd forgotten just how good it was. Some of the CHI, especially of the ship is absolutely superb, though they xenomorph does look a bit weedy to me, and there is one part where I swear he does a baby Groot.

All in all though, it's definitely worth watching if you want 2 hours of a decent Alien film. It's not in the same league as the original two but it is a lot better than Alien 3 and Prometheus.

Anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

Independence Day - Resurgence

From memory this was panned by the critics, so I avoided it, but having a lazy Saturday morning and thought, why not....
I was pleasantly surprised, I mean, its is terrible, not a patch on ID4, but c'man, its a silly lighthearted movie that has a ton of aliens in a completely unbelievable scenario with the forces of earth (USA) attempting to save the planet. taking it at face value it filled a couple of hours, I laughed at bits and even my 13 year old daughter really enjoyed it too.

I watched rings it was ok, I thought the first ring movie
'the ring' was something different and found it entertaining. But I think they are starting to drag it out a bit now.
Avoiding anything to do with 'Covenant' hope to watch it next wk. Hopefully it lives up to my expectations because I really enjoyed Prometheus.

Watched Alien Covenant last night. Was totally engrossed and on the edge of my seat throughout, but the story was a bit of a mess. As Weas said above, some of the characters were a little bit throwaway- definitely too many of them. Also agree about the score- was a mash up of the best bits from the original Alien and Prometheus- worked really well. There were some fantastic bits- loved Walter and David and the new Neomorphs were absolutely foul 8) As for the giving it a 15- what does a film have to do to be an 18 these days? Parts were absolutely horrifying and ridiculously violent- my mate had his face in his hands for most of it  Should be an 18 every day of the week IMHO.

Liked it, but preferred Prometheus, which I think is a very underrated film.

Did David's outfit remind you of anyone?

The Bye Bye Man

A horror movie based on a book that uses barely anything from the story to make a laughably bad film.

And ffs how titles a killer as the Bye Bye Man.

Going Tuesday, can't wait.. I maybe one of the few folk that really likes Prometheus though!

LMK what you think. I'll wait a few days before starting a thread on it to let more people see it.

Brilliant lol. That hadn't even dawned on me

I'm amazed at the Prometheus love though. It wasn't a bad film but a massive missed opportunity IMO.

The Hateful Eight

Well behind the curve catching up to watch this one. Not a Tarrantino fan as such, but I've got an awful lot of love for Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill 1&2. Disliked Jackie Brown and I'm a bit meh about True Romance... Django Unchained I felt was OK, an attempt to try and reassert himself as a film maker and in it there were some elements that made it both watchable on the basic level mainly due to two key performances and entertaining too.

This thing though.. utter dog ****.

Not one actor shone, the story line didn't really exist, the sets were even a poor pastiche of what could/should have been created, I really can't name one good part... Such a shame.

Passengers

What a pleasant surprise... Don't know anything about the leading lady other than she did the Hunger Games thing, which I only really half watched with my daughter, but she seemed effectively a poor man's Laura Croft... The lead man though; I have always found him a funny guy. Guardian's of the Galaxy he was a funny guy, Parks and Recreation he was a very very funny guy... so a serious Sci-fi piece, reminiscent in parts to may favourite ever sci-fi film (Silent Running) with him at the helm seemed a stretch on paper.

This was actually a really good watch, not heavy, not silly, certainly not full of gags for the male lead to deliver and not a runaway action flick for her to bound through. Its actually a pretty touching piece that on a basic level explores human relationships and companionship with a little action mixed in for good measure. Cracking support from Michael Sheen as an android bar tender too.

Alien Covenant

Righty ho, back from the flicks and my initial reaction is that I really enjoyed it... Its not perfect, not at all, but it is good.

It's a little disjointed, the characters you eventually get to know are decent, but as others have said there are initially far too many to get to know or connect with, so to start off you may feel a little lost in it all.

The overall Alien aesthetics are still there and in some ways have evolved nicely too.

As ever with any Ridley Scott film, the photography (and set(s)) is stunning as well as often being epic in scale. The opening scene is indoors in a single room, but the scale and beauty of both the set and final photography is up there with anything else I can think of.

Sure, its not the haunting and edge of your seat tension of Alien, its also not the gun toting action of Aliens... it is though a step closer to the the first two than Prometheus was. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys the Alien films, or that has an interest in general sci-fi (some of the model making ad space scenes are worth paying to see IMO) or of course those that are partial to some blood, shock and gore.

Spoilers below

Watched Alien Covenant last night.
It was fair overall, but felt it lacked the suspense.
I thought it was quite predictable in places, regarding the action at least.
The scene at the end with David was obvious even though it was dragged out.

As I'm not a massive fan of Alien, more the sci-fi, I suppose I could pick it apart all night.
There's some good scenes though, good sets, and Fassbender is superb in both of his roles.

I suppose as tehnology has improved it has taken away the atmosphere.
If you like atmosphere and suspense then the original Alien is the best. And movies like Jaws and The Thing take it to another level.

alien : covenant

i love scifi

ridley does things on a grand scale!

visually stunning. great cinematography!

plot is ok....somewhat predictable at times

worth a watch for the scenes alone

solid 7/10

Ha ha, yeah.... Blue Snaggletooth was on my mind too, when I saw David

I saw Alien Covenant today, thought it was bloody terrible. I haven't seen Prometheus recently but I think this was probably worse. I think I'm done watching new films, I just always hate them. Saw a trailer for the new Baywatch at the cinema, that looked dreadful too.
