so as im gradually picking up the odd moc, im wandering why this bad boy is always so cheap? was this the most mast produced figure or something? i see them fairly regurlarly on evilbay or was he that dull a figure that he was still in bargain bins in the early 90s and people thought he was worth purchasing and storing to sell in the future

I reckon he is just cheap because he was not a popular figure so lots remained on the shelf - and unlike Leia (how many boys wanted Leia) I reckon they did big runs of them so that is probably why so many are available.

Generally how 'common' a MOC is depends on the stocks left over and bought after the craze was over. For example there are some Palitoys such as Boba Fett that are incredibly common, because about 20 boxes of them were found/bought in the early 90s. Personally I don't think it has that much to do with shop stock levels at the time, the majority of what we buy and trade now would never have even been sold in shops.

No he means this :D

I think Grant just meant that if they have price stickers on they must have made it to shops and not been sitting in shipping cases all their lives.

Yes- thats what I mean't. Thanks Joe

These can be added later though.

Like if you had, say.......

An ESB Hoth stormtrooper with a price sticker rip. You could easily get a price sticker off a cardback to hide the sticker tear and then sell it.

But you would have to be a giant ass hole to do that. A real scumball, so i doubt there's any examples of that going on.

I agree with Edd. I think it's more due to how many have unsurfaced since they stopped selling in shops as oposed to how popular the figure was. I remember Klaatu being quite popular when i was a kid. Him and Weequay were 2 figures i asked for for my birthday and i remember being pretty excited about opening them. I do however think a figures popularity now has a lot to do with a) how many are available and b) how expensive or cheap they are. And one can often lead to the other. What i think you will see happen tho, in years to come, is a lot of the less popular figures (especially ROTJ), Gam Guard, Bib Fortuna, Admiral Ackbar and so on, will become rarer and rarer and eventually almost cease to exist due to UGrading. We're already seeing it with mocs like Ackbar and Nien Nunb. Once given no thought whatsoever by collectors and now people are realising they're 2 of the more difficult to find especially in good condition. Gam Guard will be next. How many of them do you see around now-a-days??
I've been searching for Ackbar for 2 years both on trilogo and ROTJ but the only ones that come up are yellow bubbles or shitty cards. The search goes on...

I with you that mate.

I don't think collectors realise. Ackbar is getting harder to find on a good card and a sensible price.

I also think that pegwarmers are mass produced. I remember Jabba's cards more than any other figure when i was a kid.

The thought had gone through my mind that you had read that thread and had a heavy night out and thought you dreamt it lol!

Yeah bad isn't it? I once had a pristine ROTJ MOC with price stickers and after about 10 months I decided to remove them and underneath was a huge rip in the card, looked like **** after and I had to sell it on. Sometimes I wonder if ignorance is bliss on these things..if I hadn't removed them I wouldn't have known!

I think Edd is right about the stock. It seemed like in the early 90's when I first started collecting almost every dealer had MOC Klaatus.
I've shown these before, but for those that haven't seen them, here's a couple of examples that I saved from back then.

The first is from the Lucasarts Star Wars Adventurer catalog that was bundled with some of their games.

and this one is from an old Sci Fi magazine

In both cases they were $15 and the adverts ran for quite some time, so they obviously had a little bit of stock of them.

Edit: This had me wondering if Klaatu could be found by the case. I haven't found a Kenner example yet, but it looks like Palitoy at least did.

I usually just use black crayons to cover that up.

It says WOOF! lol

On a serious note, $15 for a mint on card doesn't seem too bad, using a very rough calculation of US Dollar values now with inflation that would be about $27 in todays money, not bad I think.

When i was a kid Klaatu and Weequay where peg warmers in evry place they sold Star Wars .

And there are always at least one Klaatu in evry childhood collction i pick up . They where very common back then so that they still are lots aronhd as moc's don't suprice me

I remember in the late 80s there was always klaatu in the shops. I had 3 Klaatu when I was a kid, not that I liked him very much. You also find a klaatu in every childhood collection :D
