It is true that the Palitoy X-wing does not usually have electronics. I don't know about the ran out of parts story, I think it was a cost cutting exercise

The white one is Snagbar's- no red light or blue button at the back. The grey one(from ebay) does have the blue button. Not sure what is going on there?? The box picture does not have it.

I didn't realize this was the grey Palitoy X-Wing. This X-Wing is indeed a bit more rare.

the grey pal ones just have a button but no sound or lights, they are rarer than the white ones but there's still quite a few around.

The recess for the hole is there on all of them by the looks of things. Maybe they were all cast without a hole and the hole made latter??

possible, but I can't really believe that the holes were drilled rather than cast. It's an odd one. The pal button even has a spring, may they were going to go for sound only but couldn't be arsed in the end

here's one i recently sold - definitely no hole, but a bit of plastic instead

The R2 wing locking mechanism is also different- but only when you pull them apart.
