Is it time to get over the one post wonders?

This is a great forum were people help out fellow collectors..

:D

Interesting topic this, over the weekend I spoke with many many people about collecting and directed a host of people towards this forum. However, when explaining the forum I did instruct them to stick with the forum as they may well experience abuse after first couple of posts.

I understand that some come on here peddling modern **** at ridiculous prices, or someone asking for a valuation then going straight off to eBay, and of course some of those people probably do deserve some of the **** they get. But some people join and maybe make a poor first post and get hammered where a better response would be politely to instruct them how things work rather than berating them with explicits.

We all started off on here at some point and wonder how some of us would have stuck around if we received the same welcome that some do. I can't remember my first post but I'm 99% sure it wasn't 'hello, I'm Stuart and I like sugar puffs'.

I think I actually discussed this exact topic with Edd in fact at Celebration.

I think maybe sometimes we need to give new users the benefit of the doubt that they don't know the protocol, we're all here for the love of the same thing and most people that find themselves posting here get run off forum by the same people that should be embracing each other and chatting about the love of the same topic that binds us all together.

Let's just give these people a chance, not a difficult thing to try.

I retract parts of my statement after receiving this message last night on eBay.

"I may be interested in some of your Star Wars figures, but I only want them in Mint condition with super tight limbs, no paint lose or marks, No cigarette smoke smell, no reproduction weapons/parts and I don't want any figures that have been touched up. When you advert some of your figure as mint, is this all the above / 100% Mint / New condition? Thanks Thomas."

The best thing for me to do is not to reply I think. But yes, I can see why people do have shorter tolerance for this type of rudeness.

As someone who has been both rude and helpful to newbies I can obviously see which is more beneficial to our reputation. I say our as we are all part of this community and whilst it is Edds forum it's reputation and impact on collectors new and old is affected by our actions.
I will and do endevour to offer help and advice whether it is from my own limited knowledge or just pointing people in the direction of the person I would ask the question to.
Overall I would say more self control and tolerance, less sheep like behaviour with regard to hurling abuse and insults is the way forward.
If you see me acting like a bully on future threads please call me out over it and direct me to this thread.

cheers

Carl

I have no problem with one post wonders as long as they have respect and appreciation.

I joined RS over three years ago for what I thought would be one post. I liked it so much I then joined SWFUK, TIG and on and on and on.

That one post was one of the best decisions of my life :) Except for having to put up with Hothmyfave....
