i wired up my old computer today and it says windows needs a validation code before i can access all my old files..it gave me a series of numbers to give over the net but the old computer is not online so how do i validate my old computer using this computer i am on now :?: :?:

you will have the option of doing it over the phone as well, it will generate a 30 digit code for you to type in over the phone, it will then give you an activation code, or put you through to support if the version is dodgy.

i would take that hard drive out and install it in another PC - use it as a storage drive and then u will be able to whip your stuff off it

rang the number and typed in the 25 digit code ..they then said i had to change the id on the computer which i did but i did not get a new 25 digit code wtf

Not good slim, Not good at all. Ask plantman i think he is ace with computers. If it was full of sentimental photos I would even consider paying to the photos recovered.

Lionel,

your photos are safe mate as long as the hard drive works, two things you can do, take the hard drive out of that PC and plug it into another PC and you will be able to explore all the data on the drive and copy it off. (make sure you have the correct jumper settings on the drives)

you could also buy a 3.5 inch cd drive caddy for about £10, its just an external bay for a cd drive but it will also take a hard drive, you can then plug the hard drive in externally to your other PC and keep it as an external hard drive.

the other way to get the data off would be to boot from a linux disk but you are getting more complicated for no reason.

have you tried booting in safe mode? i cant remember if it bypasses the activation code......worth a try, press f8 whilst booting up and choose safe mode.

Im always willing to help so add me to msn to chat or PM me.

Andy

i never tried using safemode when booting up....and last night i packed the computer away in the attic again  i will get it down over the next few days again and try pressing f8 to see if it does anything ! thanks again for your help and advice......its my fault for not making backup cds
