Graded Yak Face Baggie

Regardless who it belongs to I remeber Del saying that Yak face baggies were not known to exist and any that surface are most likely fakes? The reason for posting this is to show that AFA are grading things as authentic when there is not documented evidence they have ever existed. Also a taped sealed baggie?!? Surely this is the most easy to fake baggie type out there?

Have a read of the RS thread and make your own mind up guys, its a long read but deffo an interesting one.

Tom graded this but has really covered his ass.

Truth is no one knows if its legit or not.

The only bagged Yaks i believe to be legit are the palitoy baggies from the woolworths 8 pk.
I have seen many of them over the years, own one and know other collectors that own them.

The ebay one originally came from uk dealer Jason Joiner, so make your mind up.

I don't want to say too many negative things about this as it would not be fair on the current owner who paid good money for it.

Del, I understand you dont want to cast an opinion on this as it would be unfair on the owner. I hope I havent used your name to influence peoples thoughts on this?
I do remember seeing a POTF group shot of about 8 figures lined up for a mailaway promotion, but I am yet to hear of anyone who has actually found one? I think I saw it in Kellermans book. Is this the Palitoy box set your talking about?
Ed

No its fine mate, my thoughts on these baggies are pretty clear for all to read on Rs.

There was apparently going to be a poft U.S mailer, but it never materialised.

The poft palitoy baggies are completely different.

When the SW fad was coming to an end woolworth sold pre packed sets of 8 figures for 99p.
Some of these bags contained loose figures, some contained a mixture of loose and bagged and some contained just baggies. Loose figures were more common, but i actually bought some packs back in the day containing baggies.

Now a small amount of these packs contained poft figures, but they are extremely rare.
Figures were shipped to palitoy in individual baggies, these baggies would be opened and the figures put on card.
(I was told this info by a former palitoy employee, and then only today a spanish collector on Tig said a former meccano employee confirmed the same thing)
Now as you could imagine when the star wars craze died down palitoy were left with lots of figures to shift.
Some were loose (already removed from their baggies awaiting to be carded) and some would of been still in baggies.
Woolworths back then were a major outlet for SW, so they ran the 8 figures for 99p promotion.

The 8 figures were packed by palitoy in a larger bag,and had a cardboard sleeve. They were shipped to woolies in a larger box and then woolworths added the price sticker in store.
Every bag was completely random, but the majority contained rotj figures.

I was a huge fan of these as a kid, my local woolies had huge amounts of them and me and a friend would open them up in store and make our own 8 pks up lol.

The one on ebay right now is NOT one of these palitoy baggies.

Very interesting buddy, thanks for the history.
(The image of you and your mate making your own 8 packs is fantastic!)
Have you any memories of which baggies you found? I get excited when I see slightly older Lego sets in independant toy shops, the thought of buying 8 baggies in woolies for 99p is awesome. What year are we talking Del, end of the 80's? I know this gets put all the time in vintage SW forums but time machine anybody?!

I can remember them better than buying carded Ed.

We would also sneak the weapons out of one bag and into the one we were buying lol.

My friend definately had an imperial dignitary as i remember switching it from my pack as i hated the figure.
I replaced it with a gamorrean guard

When i started collecting again as an adult i dug my old figures out, this was quite a long time ago (i was about 19 or 20)
Amongst them were 2 klaatu baggies so they would of been from a woolies pack. I also had a leia boussh that was opened. I know of loads of collectors that had baggies in their packs including last 17 figures.

As for a year, well i was still young so could not be exact, it would of obviously been after the last 17 tri logos were released and would of been at the same time as they were selling the cheapy speeder bikes etc for 49p.
I'm guessing 86-87ish.

Thats awesome, thanks for sharing Del. I wish I had vintage memories....im too young
Its cool you have some of your childhood baggies too!

I don't anymore mate.
I sold up about 7-8 years ago and took almost a whole year off......thats my biggest regret selling my childhood figures.
I only have a loose luke jedi left from my childhood.

Cant remember woolies 8 packs but can remember the great sell off when all carded figures were 10p!!!
Me and my mates bought loads n loads of them. Didn't keep any though!! Doh!!!!

In my local woolies all the carded figures dissapeared and there were just bins full of 8pks & speeder bikes.
It could simply be that all the carded figures sold out quickly at those prices.

Looking back, they were probably just getting rid of all their old carded stock. If I remember correctly the were loads and loads of erg's and leia poncho's. I imagine most woolies must of had a similar carded sale at some point.
