getting a kitten

The local cats do my head in too. The soil under our hedge is pretty much wrecked from cats shitting under there - and yes I've got a couple of sonic deterrents set up in the garden. If the garden were completely fenced in I'd have the dogs out there more often.

My brother lived in London and now LA, and his cats never go outside. I also remember visiting one of my Uni mate's when he'd moved back with his parents - it was the first time I'd been down there. His parents had an expensive cat and that's exactly what they used to do. Watching someone walk a cat on a lead was really strange, and he absolutely hated taking it out! However...

One of my ex-colleagues had his cat run over within a week of moving to a house on main road. I'd think carefully before deciding whether to let the little garden-ruining-bird-killing-****-machine out of the door unattended

Not sure how much this may take away from their standard of life.
Not overly fussed about the cat but it would improve my family's standard of life.

Martin, we have exactly the same situation. EVERY time I go to mow the lawn I have to clear up between 5 and 15 lumps (or pools!) of cat ****. EVERY time. I am so utterly fed up of it and don't see why I should keep spending money on deterrents year, after year, after year, to stop someone else's pets crapping all over my property. Both my boys use the garden a lot and regularly tread in it. If they were toddlers, this could have caused blindness. There was also a big, aggressive tom cat who used to spray everywhere to mark his territory. He killed half of our brand new box hedge as a result. He got ran over a couple of months ago, but another cat has just stepped up as the dominant male and is doing the same.

Not to mention the wildlife... 80 million songbirds a year in the UK. Just listen to Chris Packham talk about cats and wildlife...

Cat owners always seem to just bury their heads in the sand and just pretend it's not a problem. They always just laugh or shrug it off and NEVER take responsibility. Does my head in...

Sympathise with you wholeheartedly Andy, it's bloody frustrating and frankly miserable!

The only thing I haven't tried so far (aside from a BB gun) is lion ****. Apparently if you put a lump of that under a plant pot or similar it can discourage the domestic feline vermin. I live quite close to Colchester zoo so might try and get me some!

Chin up mate - a car might get this one too!

I was walking my dog earlier this year through the woods and walked past a bloke walking his dog.... and his cat  the dog was on a lead and the cat was just following him, never seen that in my life.

FYI I heard cats absolutely hate the scent of lemons, some people put a few slices around the perimeter of the garden and in the soil in flower beds which apparently keeps them away. Hasn't really worked for me but it has for others apparently, could just be a certain percentage of cats that hate it.

That would really be annoying if you've kids playing in your own lawn and it's peppered with cat **** like a mine field. Especially if they are strays or neighbours cats. I've never had thankfully bother myself with cats but I see them around. I just wouldn't put up with them shitting on my lawn if they kept at it continually.
A guy i worked with always said a tin of out of date tuna will stop them coming back. Again I don't know if it works or not or what the outcome is. But if you're concerned about the children's eyesight getting damaged I'd have no mercy on them if they kept coming back.

I don't know if this would keep cats out of your garden either, but the smell of rotting fish would certainly keep me out of it

Knowing my luck i'd put it in the garden and it would end up as a local meeting place for cats all shitting and shagging and fighting lol.

I have 2 kittens, we've had them 6 months now, best thing I ever did they are adorable, they like chewing on my loose figures so ended up giving them a beater each :D one thing I would say is don't let it out keep it as a house cat because if it gets run over it will break your missus's heart and I bet a big hairy bloke like you will probably cry more than her if it does :D

well its been a couple of days with her (Millie) and she's quite the character

Congratulations on your new arrival! She looks lovely.

I agree with Lindo, if you keep her inside (which would be sensible if your road is really busy), then get another kitten to keep her company.
