Not looking good for AOTC and ROTS!!

For me got to be the original!! There's even Jawas in it!!

Difficult, I would probably go with ANH as that's where it all started for me, was taken to the cinema by my dad to watch it and my first characters are from that movie. Although Empire is technically better, and some of the scenes in Jedi are amazing... all of them have special memories for me.

Star Wars is the best of the bunch. A master class in film making which stands in its own merits.

The Empire Strikes Back is much more polished but with its down beat ending, the appreciation of the film depends greatly on it being viewed in the context of the overall film saga.

Return of the Jedi brought the original trilogy to a satisfying conclusion and while mature viewers can find fault with it (droid torture – really?) you will be hard pressed to find a better film for children and young people.

Regarding the prequels, I’d like to see anyone who voted for the Phantom Menace to post why the prefer it. Children who saw it upon its release are young adults now. C’mon be brave!

Craig.

Altough star wars startted it all, it wasn't the best as many scenes had to be made on low budget.
However, when it hit it succes, they had everything they needed to make ESB.
ESB, went further with his graphic, contained epic scenes and great music and takes the story up to a new level. I love the special effects for his age and the Luke vader battle is just great.

Many new movies have an overkill on special effects and many scenes/battles provide to much things happening on screen at the same moment to truly notice everything and enjo the overall picture.

ESB is perfect on these criteria in every way, so my vote goes to ESB!

I hope TPM votes aren't people taking the piss. I don't think it's as bad as people say and it would be interesting for someone to explain why it's the best of the 6.

I'm sure there are plenty of members who don't partake in debate and surf the forum hidden. They probably see this as a hilarious opportunity to sabotage a important discussion and vote

Any way of having the voting stats analysed so that we can see who the plonkers are

I'd like to know who they are................so I can ban them!

There's definitely something special about Empire. No doubt about it.

obviously there's something special about all of them (even the prequels to some extent) but ESB seems to be the 'deepest' of the 3.

That said it was my least favourite as a kid and still to this day Jedi is my favourite. It tends to get the hardest knock out of the originals and get described as the 'kiddies' one but I found it quite moving in places, has some awesome battles and bring the trilogy to a nice ending 8)

2 votes for Phantom Menace...someone's on a wind up.

Going to be a close run thing between SW & ESB. SW get my vote.

Ehhh, Gary, Have you been drinking!? :?
Or do you mean the prequels are "special" as in 'special needs' special?

I change my opinion on this matter depending on my mood.
Having said that, Star Wars started it all off for me, it's the film which I'd recommend to everyone to watch first if they were yet to experience the saga.
I love ESB and ROTJ but for me Star Wars is Eps ANH

If you'd of asked me 18 months ago I've of said Empire hands down. But recently I've been swaying towards Jedi. Maybe it's knowing there's going to a story beyond it (not EU bullshit) and the possibles of that.

i gave revenge of the sith a vote. and heres some of my personal reasoning.

Lucas has ****ed around with the original trilogy so much that even Empire for me has become tarnished. Despite it being the best film ever made ever (despite the meteorite hand sock puppet - which is ****ing shyte).

Revenge of the Sith puts all the legendary star wars moments into movie form that we speculated about many years ago; The rise of Darth Vader; the Darth v Kenobi fight; the Jedi's getting annihilated; Yoda's exile; Jedi eternity; the fall of the jedi order; the birth of the twins. All brilliant parts of the star wars mythos.

My favourite scene in the entire movie and maybe one of the most momentous in star wars is when the failed grand master Yoda walks through the door, kills the Imperial guards, barely flinching to face sidious. Yoda by this stage has totally failed, his lack of clear vision in preventing the sith rising. He might have been nearly 800 years old but his bloated careless jedi order is dead. What the **** has he been doing all that time? Misunderstanding the prophecy and you also question what was yoda's point in fronting Sidious? A desperate last attempt which he must have known would fail as he had already planned an escape using his mate Jimmy Smits. He must have gone there to see or feel the power of the dark side and to try and sneak a lucky win. Sidious knowing he has won just laughs him off, kicks him around and is more than a match, cackling at yoda's failure having lost several of his best jedis to him and then slaps him in the chops calling him little and green. What a bastard.

I find it really sad that a lot of star wars fans of the OT don't give the prequels much credence. But theres loads of stuff in all three films that are as great as some moments that suck. ROTS is a brilliant piece of star wars. Its weakest moment is the death of Padme, no reason they couldnt have had her dying from her injuries at the hand of Darth, and also the omission of Yoda retreating to dagobah. Binks even has a genuinely powerful moment where he's the moron who ends democracy in the senate.

just thought it was all too predictable to put Empire down... Ive said elsewhere, sith, SW and ESB make a brilliant trilogy of movies. tpm, aotc and rotj are bonus footage

empire hands down

I have always kind of liked Sith but what lets it down are the same things that let all the prequels down. If you took Sith, ANH and Empire as a trilogy and saw them back to back the plot line makes sense, but the style of Sith is just too far detached from the originals. It's horrible! Some of the characters just make me want to puke or laugh out loud. It's all CGI which is not absolutely necessary these days, just look at a film like Dredd.

This leads me onto something that I really ****ing despise with the prequels :x ...it's all so bloody shiny and clean! How does this happen? We never see little cleaning droids scrubbing the place. I know you can get windows these days that supposedly clean themselves. Maybe the whole prequel universe has this technology in absolutely everything! The originals were grubby and felt lived in. I guess this is down to the lack of CGI and that basically means props were used which were actually grimy. Love that :)

Lucas has messed with the original films way too much, so much so that they begin to look like the prequels with loads of stupid background crap added. Not needed.

In years to come we'll be asking the same question as this thread. Everyone knows we'll still be voting Empire or ANH because the new films are bound to be just as crap and false as the prequels

Had to go with ESB 8)

Not having a copy of it as a kid means its is probably the one I have watched least in the OT.

I am surprised at how for behind ROTJ is on the voting though :o

I enjoyed the prequels but ROTS is the only one that comes close to any of the OT. I really enjoyed it but the OT are just to strong (maybe just in nostalgia) for ROTS to muscle in on them.

Well played setting this up Grant, its always a good thread and peoples minds do change. :D

and I think thats a deliberate look, its been talked about a lot. The republic is still in its pomp, its grand halls, shiny floors and political posturing - add to that science cloning etc. The very fact that clones are talked about throughout the OT (or at least mentioned by OWKenobi) science is advanced to a point. Logically what makes a Jedi a jedi is entirely feasible. The Jedi have a temple where its all sparkly. The republic falls. the dark times come and theres a rebellion. The things they use aren't going to come off a production line. Its patchwork, its spare parts. Plus its Lucas's play on religion, the prequels are about the times when organised Religion was all about massive cathedrals and money, the Jedi Temple is essentially the Vatican.. and the OT is about the true meaning of religion being part of somebody's core faith, not about how big your church is if you believe you can defeat the biggest enemy.. etc.

I believe somewhere on one of the blu rays there is the original release of the films. I had no problem with a bit of tinkering, tidying up some of the blue screen ship outlines, adding some windows into cloud city, stuff like that.. but the twice ****ed up Jabba Scene in Star Wars is awful, as is the pop song in ROTJ.. I wonder when we'll see Boba rocket thrusting from the Sarlacc and then sharing a song with it..

The problems with the prequels were that Lucas himself directed them. The Phantom Menace is far too staid and serious then as if to counter that he injected childish sequences which looked like a man seriously out-of-touch with his target audience. Take Harry Potter, those films are aimed at youngsters, but theres very little childish action. There is no Jar Jar Binks. He is aimed at toddlers who he hoped to grab with their star wars mad parents as they grew up with the films over the preceding 6 years.. fart jokes and noises. And how does any youth relate to senate debating 'action', democracy 'hijinks', its as if Lucas was thinking of running for office and thought "How can I make politics fun".. and then Jar Jar makes a funny noise over a creature doing a ****.. who the **** thought that was good? I cannot work out who TPM is aimed at, its an utter disaster and if any film needs a serious edit, its that one. Im sure between that and AOTC you can patch together a decent 2 hour film.

Heres my suggestions
- Edit back all the **** binks comes out with. The twisty dive into the water, the silly phrases, the fart gags, the battle field 'humour'...
- "Roger, Roger" Re-voice the ****ing battle droids, and remove the silly edge. A low cheaper sounding voice would actually deliver the comedy angle Lucas was after, but because he thinks a silly voice is funny, he misses out on the pathos that could be delivered by a sadder sounding, less toned voice.
- A couple of the podrace aliens look as if they were designed by children.. Ben quadineros or whatever his name is just a large head on legs.. seriously **** off with your Mr. Men. Theres an excuse to use some already established alien species.
- "Yippee".. get rid.. no one says that. Again, Lucas thinking its what kids say.. no George... no.

You're in for a treat then Liam, I have no doubt they'll be re-releasing the original trilogy at the cinema before they release the new film as they did before the prequels, soak it up.

Actually what's the go with that, will Disney have any say on showing the original films prior to release if they are still licensed to Fox?
