Had a small heart attack today when I went down to my basement today and saw that I had about half an inch to an inch of water in places. Some of the boxes I keep some of my ships in got wet and I had to pull them out and hope for the best which luckily the only things that got wet were the bottom stickers on a snowspeeder and the bottom corner of the inner cardboard wall in my falcon. I was able to open them up and dry them off without losing anything. Wondered if any of you had any similar experiences with hopefully good outcomes.
 
Glad to hear not to much damage, thankfully I haven't had any flooding. From your experience it just shows it would do no harm having the collection up of the floor on something.
 
What a nightmare, glad everything is ok. I've never had any water damage. Only thing that has happened similar is the loft flooded in my parents house when I was in Australia for a year and the water came with in half an inch of my collection which was stored up their for the year. :shock:
 
Glad all was ok for you , reminds me of what happened to me in 1992, I had stripped all the paint of a vw beetle and went on holiday with mates for two weeks when I got back my parents garage roof had leaked and the whole bug had rusted lots of extra rubbing down had to happen before re paint :(
 
all surface damage, think that's all the fashion now a days with clear coat or oil on top for the rat look but not back then just more work, it was all resto cal or vintage resto happy days, cruising down the road in a souped up bug loads of noise and not much grunt, still we all used to wave at each other and go to shows :)

I think it was Jupiter grey, I returned it to its original colour, sold it a few years ago now it was a 53 , had a 67 some years ago also and really loved that car best bug I have ever driven, some buggys over the years also all sadly now sold , time for a mid life crisis :) but these cars like sw vintage are now stupid money for decent ones so priced out of the market on both fronts now :lol:
 
Wow that's a lucky close call, just be glad it didn't happen while you were away and it could have ended up much worse.

It's the stuff of nightmares. :shock:

You may wanna get a dehumidifier in there running for a day or two to remove the excess moisture soaked up in the floor & walls, as any moisture that's been soaked up by concrete & wood will evaporate out when it gets warmer, and can seep back into papers and card when they absorb the moisture.
 
I've not had any of my vintage SW damaged but I've had water seeping into my basement. I was looking at getting it tanked until I saw the cost. We don't use it for anything other than storage so what we ended up doing was having a French drain put in around the outside wall (which is where the water was seeping in). This fed into a sump and is then pumped outside. This came in a lot cheaper and has (touch wood) not been a problem since.

If you're keeping valuable stuff down there it's worth looking into - all I'd say from experience is get a couple of reputable companies in to survey it and recommend what needs doing.
 
Thankfully cellars are quite rare in the UK, so we don't suffer from this problem as much.
Glade everything is mostly ok.

I've been running one in there for a few days now which is helping a lot. Had to get the water pumped out which wasn't fun. At least it seems good now.
