Facebook sales pros and cons?

Mr-shifter said:
Well, he spat the dummy and just put them up for sale. It's the admins fault apparently for deleting his presale posts.

Some of the prices are typically eye watering, although I thought the $400 on the leia hoth was probably not unreasonable. $600 for an r2 Pop up and $750 for a 75 Luke stormie, whatever the **** 75 means. Good old yak up for a cool $1800 if you have lost all leave of your senses.

Yep I also thought his 'sale' was hilarious. Claims he's doing everyone a massive favour by posting the details on all the different pages, then changes the date, and then starts selling them nearly 24 hours early! Needles to say nobody had a bloody clue what was going on

I also loved the way his rant started with something like "other respected high end sellers do this all the time" implying he's some collecting legend, when in fact he's only been on the scene for about a year and most of the big collectors have never heard of him. There are far too many egos on Facebook, most of whom are relative newbies.

Not trying to sound egotistical, just speaking as a guy whose been at this 20 years, I had never heard of him before this year. Same goes for the other guys who like to toss around big money and flip stuff, like Zack, Matt G., etc.

In my opinion, this small group of big spending newbies has hurt the hobby, as they are dropping huge money on items and causing rapid rises in prices on things, especially higher end items. They are turning it into an elite hobby, and driving out ordinary people.

I am not as old as Ian :D nor have I been around as long, but this is the unfortunate aspect of FB sales that always bother me too. The high priced sales come quick and often, are sold quickly, and flipping within the various groups - from eBay into the groups, from the groups onto eBay, from one group to another, and even within the same group - has really had a strong impact on the gradual, strong rise of prices over the last couple years IMO.

The sale of the trilogos was handled very poorly all around. I do think Jake meant to give people all a fair chance to buy the Trilogos by announcing when they would be for sale, but certainly that type of early publication of a sale also has an element egotistical masturbation to it and is a blatant effort to increase interest and the ultimately realized price. At the end of the day, those were all common Trilogos, not something to make such a big deal about.

Absolutely, the cycle of publicly congratulating each other on paying way over market value for things and subsequently flipping them is doing nothing but harm.

I joined most of the groups, as I just like all the easily accessible Star Wars imagery breaking up Candy Crush and "what does your name mean" bulls**t. I have whittled them down to ones that are my main interest, and often there are links to good things that haven't been picked up yet by RS or here.

The more vintage Star Wars stuff the merrier, but you have to expect a little crap thrown in too.

Is Vince's pre production 2d group still in existence?
When I click on the link in his sig here on the forum I only get an error message in FB?

Thanks

Have banned pre sale and flash sale posts from my group as a result of all this.

Jason

and I see you have begun to enforce that people must post a price..none of that PM me or best offer crap. Good on you as that is one of my biggest issues with some of these twats.

That's a good policy, as it is I like discussion but on facebook 90% of the posts aren't discussion they are sale posts - if you are going to allow every Tom, Dick and Harry to spam it up even further with pre-sale posts then it will really be a chore to scroll through them all.

One thing that was abit of fun, does anyone remember a year or two ago RS did a 'virtual toy fair' with a whole bunch of sellers listing their stuff on a pre-arranged date, and also 'manning' the stall by being online and able to respond to buyers queries. I thought was fun and worked well. Maybe the facebook groups could try that one day.

Wasn't that Joe Fiore (finestcomics) that ran that Bonsai? I had to miss out on that due to lack of funds. Could be fun if done again, as I'm sure the kinks from the first time would be ironed out.

And good on you Jason. :) I can't believe the entitlement as he continues to cry about it even though he sold everything anyway.

Ian

Jason, I hope you realise how many fine collectors missed out on paying $1800 dollars for a yak moc because of you.

The blokes a ****ing tube. Was he giving them away? All I saw was 32 overpriced trilogos that all got sold within 2 days. And he is still whining like a *****.

If it were something like the earth find I could understand the need for a presale thread. It's 32 reasonably available tri logo cards. Not even a boba or hybrid ccp. No jawa, no hammerhead and one miscard so common even I have one.

And while I'm ranting, the ****ing arrogance of starting a post on why you dared to delete his thread, and demanding the owner of the group explain his rules and interpretation of the rules. It's Facebook. If you don't like it then don't use it.

I had to go on facebook to look at this...

"The sale has come and gone.
WITHOUT advertising.
And a lot of fine collectors missed out. frown emoticon"

Hahahahahahahhaha! This is hilarious. Is this guy selling Star Wars figures at over-inflated prices or is he making a eulogy to those who lost their lives in the Great War...

I don't quite get the whole thing. Apologies if someone mentioned this on the FB thread I CBA to read it all, but surely it makes no difference how many people are intersted? If he has a price of £100 (i cant remember the exact figure) it doesn't matter if one person or 100 people want it. It's first come first served and sells at that price. Unless he was planning to play people off against each other or back door people there's no real benefit to having lots of interest. One person prepared to pay his asking price is all he needs.

Or am I just not retarded enough to see his point?

Weasel, what he has is a ****ing massive ego, and finances to go with it. He was trying to be big king ding a ling. He was treated like the other 15k members in the group and he doesn't like it.

Sounds about right!

Hi,

Interesting discussion points here. To comment on a few of them, In my experience of things:

1) Generally, FB sale prices are more expensive than eBay prices. If you are patient and vigilant there are still many good deals to be had from eBay auctions
2) I see no shortage or decline of the number of eBay listings week in week out. Claims that FB is taking traffic from eBay just doesn't ring true for me. People harvesting from eBay and then selling on with a markup on FB seems a more compelling theory if any.
3) Bad transaction experiences happen both on eBay and FB groups. One is probably no worse than the other, it's just an unfortunate ever present risk in the hobby.
4) High prices? Yes, but only to those of us that have a bit of a history in the hobby. To those entering the hobby in the last year or two, they will not know any different -- this is normal for them. I'm going to be bold and predict May/June/July 2016 you will get a lot more for your money again. For now, I keep an eye out for something special, or a bargain, but otherwise enjoy being a spectator in the side-lines.

Cheers, Jared.

Yep that's basically all it was, he wanted the 'glory' of doing a mass sale. And let's face it it wasn't even an interesting sale, he genuinely thinks trilogo Yak Faces are R@RE  If he was honestly doing it 'for the good of the hobby' he would have just listed them in the trilogo group he is an admin of (and hopefully not for much longer now he doesn't have any!)
