Facebook sales pros and cons?

Ross, if you read carefully, some names have been given already ;)

Oh and I like bitching too, as well as saying ****, dick, ****, which is not allowed on the other forums (let's see if this post will get moderated...) ;)

I see a lot about Jake Repas. Who else we talking about here? Time for the kid gloves to come off.

I do agree with Ross, there have been flippers and scalpers long before the internet (I'm sure those at the last Farthest From remember a certain dealer hoovering up all the good stuff before the event even opened!)

And personally, if any of the self titled "respected sellers" have something I want at a price I'm happy with? I'll damned well pay it.

I don't disagree with this generally, but isn't that then endorsing in some way the people you apparently loathe?

Ross

I see where you're coming from, but no. As far as I'm concerned it would only endorse the price that was being asked for the item, not the seller.

If we're going to name names then I'd like to add the following to the list of pay-through-the-nose/charge-the-earth folks on ebay:

Zach Tann
Johnj Lennon

I will add to this short list as there are numerous ones out there, but these two really, really wind me up. Hey, they may be stand up guys, be a huge part of some community somewhere and lead utterly selfless lives, but they annoy the **** out of me :D

Yes :x Did not agree with him being allowed access before others, but what can you do? And anyway, I doubt we're involved in the same end of the marketplace

Yep and I could add other names to the list. But each time I've started a discussion about X or Z being a flipper I got the "sellers ask what they want for their items", "this is America", "this is a capitalist world", "not happy move along" responses! So yes what's the point in naming flippers. Let's just move along and let the newbs pay.

Although I agree with a lot of the comments here, I'd prefer this didn't derail in to a seller bashing thread please guys. I love the fact this forum is full of passionate and modest collectors, but there have always been people in the hobby only in it for the money and as Ross says moaning about it on a forum isn't going to help. Rather than name them here, speak to them on Facebook if you think what you have to say holds weight.

It's a good suggestion, Edd. I would, however, bet my left nut (which is smaller than my right one) that no one has the nuts (left or right) to actually do that.

I bet both my right and left (which are bigger than yours) that you would not jeopardize your left nut in implying that "no one" does not include you?! :)

Who would you like me to tell to **** off then? You know I could careless about most of them. My list is vast as far as twats and flippers.

At the end of the day, the people flipping up and down, left and right, in whatever group (FB, RS, SWFUK, Usenet groups, AOL chat, swap meets from the 1980s, their mother's basement) are gonna keep on doing it. A bunch of people whining about it in a forum does nothing to stop it. You wanna slow those people down / stop them, then start calling out who you are talking about, and approach them publicly or privately and tell them that you don't like it. But will anyone do that? Probably not. Why? Because they are too afraid of drama, or don't want to ruffle feathers, or, for some, they may (hypocritically) occasionally buy from these "respected sellers" that they are bitching about, and don't want to burn a bridge.

Ross

Hey, hey, HEY!

You know me, Ross. I ain't afraid of confrontation, lol.

I mentioned a couple by name on Page 2 of this thread, which you even quoted. :) Zach Tann and Matt George were the two I specifically mentioned. We were in the middle of discussing Jake Repas too. I'm not really active enough to know the others, although getting multiple daily email notifications about Chris Roshop's overpriced beaters is annoying too.

Of all of those, I bought a whole one item from any of them, and that was a special circumstance that you know about. It also broke my rule of refusing to ever buy anything AFA graded too. Maybe that one sale makes me hypocritical, but trust me, it is almost certainly never going to happen again. Even if my original Yak Face was offered, I'd wait for another. Only went for the one because there are so few known to exist, and it used to be mine in the first place.

Anyhow, while I don't go looking for personal confrontation over the blatant scalping, I don't back down from it either. Case in point me getting banned a few days ago from the main vintage group. I wasn't looking for the argument, just asked an innocent question of a guy I didn't even know, and when he reacted like a douche and I realized he was indeed asking absolute top dollar and pretending it was a good price, I went into aggressive mode. Two people made single statements backing me up, and the rest was this guy and his buddies slagging me like I was some uneducated rookie, but no way did I shy away from it until the ban hammer came down on me. :) You knew about that, because Jason specifically told me he was telling you and other group admins.

I did tell Jake he was being a bit of a drama queen over his whining a week or so ago too, although that one just faded away without a big argument.

Having said all that, I do agree that complaining on a forum doesn't accomplish anything. Well, except maybe to vent about an uncontrollable situation with like minded people who also agree it's useless. In that regard, it probably makes some people feel better knowing they can sound off on it.

Cheers my friend.

Ian

Oh, and I know it isn't limited to Facebook, so please don't misunderstand me into thinking that was in any way an anti-FB rant.

In my absence on Scummy Rebels, I see Edd is now being targeted by a bunch of the pro repro/AFA guys for a single comment he made a few days ago. I'd back you up Edd, but I've pulled a Yoda and exiled myself from there. :)

No worries, I know most people here are no fan of AFA, I forgot many over there have a stupid loyalty to them despite their many, many flaws. I was even considering putting together an anti-AFA blog like the Toy Toni one listing all their comical **** ups to try and open their eyes - grading repro weapons, grading a MOC with transplanted cardback, grading toy toni's, lack of consistency, Brians Toys favouritism, U-grading etc. But life is too short :)

I haven't seen any of that as i only tend to check out the LA, Sales and Celebration stuff over there. But an anti AFA Blog, Facebook group etc would be fun.
You're right though, life is too short.

The mob mentality on FB is the worst part of it imo. I've been jumped all over by a pack of sycophantics and cronies when I had the audacity to question the value of a FS thread.

The mob mentality on SWFUK works fine though cos we all (mostly) have the same opinion and the ****wits just stalk and don't post.

TBF most people on here are sane not lodged eight feet up their own asses. Unless RS.
Even at that, there are people on here who hate AFA and people who like or tolerate them. I'm in the tolerate category. I can see why people hate them, and they have a point, but I do see the advantages they offer. I make no secret of my opinions and I know those who hate AFA make no secret of theirs. Neither of us feel any need to have a massive barney about it. Mainly because 1) We're not childish wankers. 2) We accept other people's opinions. 3) There's more important **** to worry about (and to slag each other off about).

I know you're not afraid of confrontation, Ian. That's one of the many things I love about you bro. You're one of the truly good guys in this hobby, and I love the passion.

For me personally, I have to say that I am in kind of a difficult position. A lot of what people are complaining about - the rampant flipping for high prices in the FB groups - happens in the groups on FB I help admin. I hate it. I have tried to implore people in the groups to research prices, understand what "good flipping" and "bad flipping" is (I even wrote an article on it), and have even tried to start threads to discuss what current market values on certain items should be when I see people pricing stuff at high values. But doing that has brought a lot of heat my way, and I have been accused of calling people out and not being objective. As an admin in those groups, I try my best to be objective and treat everyone fairly, but the selfishness of some people really gets to me. I just wish sometimes I wasn't alone in calling some of these behaviors out sometimes, that's all. Complaining about it here isn't going to do anything, but I tend to agree that venting does make me feel better too.

By the way, I will point out that I wouldn't lump Matt George in the group of flippers. He's a good dude that just happens to buy a lot of stuff, but I don't see him flipping any of it.

Continue to call them out I say! If they don't like it, they can leave the group. I have no problem with members price bashing people on here if they deserve it, I even do it myself sometimes. I agree complaining on here about things that happen on Facebook gains nothing, but telling people their prices are too high isn't a bad thing as long as it's polite, constructive and well backed up.
