Ps, superb result for Wales!

If I had my personal choice, I want England and Wales to be the two to move on. Still UK, even if it's the Welsh, lol. :)

Ian
Three teams progress so they should both be fine but at this rate the Russian ahem "fans" will decide who's going home way before results on the pitch

Really dissapointed with the result. How we weren't two nil up before half time I don't know.

I was convinced when the first goal went in one or two more would follow. Roy is wasting Kane. Why was he taking corners ffs. Sterling looks shot of confidence. Yes he can run with the ball but seems to lack end product. Not sure his season at city helped him much at all.

If only England had a player who ran with the ball but was brimming with confidence, could finish and just had the domestic season of his life, followed by getting married. Oh wait. I would have had sterling off much earlier and vardy on. Kill the game by scoring a second and a third. Not by bringing on James Milner.

Get someone else to take corners, move on and win the next two games well.

Agreed, as top PL scorer I think Kane deserves his starting spot, but there's no way Lallana or Stirling should have been on in place of Vardy.

You forgetting about some one? There is a third UK country who have qualified

Kane was **** and Rooney was man of the match as predicted.

Surely not!? Rooney got MOTM!? He did ok, actually he did quite well, but Eric Dier was immense. Ignoring his free kick (WTF was the wall doing where it was?) his general closing down of the other team, tackling and no nonsense distribution was the epitomy of what a holding midfielder should do.
If Rooney actually got it then the good auld punditys have done the usual and given it to the guy with the biggest name. Stevie G got countless MOTM awards simply cos of who he was (for club and country) ditto Becks. It's just lazy from the pundits. How about you watch the game and give it to the player who has played the best, not just go "ohhhh (insert big name player) did ok, ehhh give it to him."

Ohh and we were shite.

9-0-1 is a novel formation but, unsurprisingly it tends to leave your lone forward a tad isolated. Poor Kyle Laffery was left chasing his own flick ons FFS!

We lost 1-0, but didn't disgrace ourselves, we were ranked 5th in our qualifying group so it's a ****ing massive step up, especially when you look at some of the players who are starting games for us. Hopefully we start with two up front against the Ukraine. One thing's for sure, if we don't beat them we're going home cos there's zero chance we'll get anything (other than a beating) from Germany.

Rooney man of the match is a joke, he was average at best. Countless times he is given a better rating than he deserves what did he do apart from hit a free kick over the bar and force a good save from the keeper, which he should have hit the back off the net with. Would like to see his pass completion percentage as well, going on the rating he got it should be about 85%, may be it is.

England got what they deserved Russia hung on and snatched the point, chance after chance whent for England with Vardy, Rashford and Sturridge sat on the bench twiddling there thumbs.

Oh no wait Rooney will save us!

86% actually, according to the BBC website :D http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36450648

Personally I thought he did really well in midfield, and he was nearly always where he was needed which is why he only had the one shot.

It was only Russia though.

Not surprising really, proves he gives the ball away to much for his reputation though. I would drop him for Wales game.

Haha, I meant within their group. ;)

We actually have Northern Ireland in Group C and Republic of Ireland in Group E. I'm going to sound stupid here, but why are there two Irish teams anyway?

I'm pulling for both of them, and if Scotland were in it, I'd pull for them too. It'll never happen, but the Final Four consisting of all British Isles would be sweet. Still, gotta ultimately hope my birth country wins it all, but any other UK country would be a consolation prize. :)

Just please not Italy or Portugal. LOTS of Italian and Portuguese fans around here, and they get incredibly arrogant during the World/Euro Cups. :( Not all, but enough that it makes them all look obnoxious.

****ing hell Ian!!! Talk about taking the pin out of a hand grenade and passing it to someone while asking what it is!?

The short version, the long version would take years and TBH it's a load of bigotry and bullshit.....
The island of Ireland is split into two countries, northern ireland, in the north eastern corner, is part of Britain. The rest of the island is known as the Republic of Ireland, or just Ireland, and it is an independent country. Although, given the proximity and history there are very strong cultural, social and familial links between Ireland and the UK. Broadly similar to what there must be between Canada and the USA.

As all four parts of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) play as seperate nations when it comes to football, that means NI have their own team.

Hence there are two "Irish" teams in the European Championships.

We like to complicate things on this island.

Ohh and this arrangement doesn't hold for all sports. For Rugby, Hockey and i think Golf, players from Northern Ireland will play international sport for a single all Ireland side.
I suspect it dates back to the partition of Ireland in 1922 (when, what is now the Republic of Ireland, left the UK and became a fully independent nation) when the various sporting governing bodies either decided to continue to as one unified body, or two split into two seperate ones.

Hopefully, that explains it without getting in to the politics of it all. That's one can of worms I'm not touching with 18 barge poles lol

Surely not!? Rooney got MOTM!?

I don't know who officially got man of the match. He was my own choice, although both full backs and even Stirling and Lallana had super 1st halves.

Nrn Irn were too defence minded and don't have the quality to pass and break a team down. Good that they try but more players needed up front so they can be more direct rather than going nowhere passing it around the defence until they eventually lose it.

LOL, sorry for stirring something up there. :D

Seriously, I knew about the political divide within Ireland. Nasty conflicts all around for way too many decades. To this day, I had always thought it was a country divided, not that they had become two separate countries. Hell, they don't even teach that over here, counting Ireland as one nation on its own! At least, they did way back when I was in school, and at my age, you could make a case a case for my schools still being log cabins and using quills as writing instruments.

I appreciate the answer. Back to discussing the tournament!

Spain scraped a win - I'm impressed so far at the quality of all the teams, I haven't seen a bad game yet and there have been no walk-overs. Even the smaller teams that have lost like Turkey and NI have lost narrowly so are in with a shout. Very different to the last World Cup where it was obvious after the opening games who was going to crash and burn (including England!)

Really? I was just thinking, i hadn't really seen any good games yet.
England and Germany both looked good in the first half, but the second half of both games was poor. Other than that, a lot of cagey 1-0's and no real edge of the seat excitement yet. Maybe it's just because it's the first round of games and teams are concentrating more on not losing, rather than winning. But, so far it's been pretty underwhelming for me.

Ohh and no pobs Ian, it's just the sort of question you asked is the prime sort to start an argument over here. It never takes much, sadly.

Short answer. When the Catholic Republic of Ireland regained independence, the 6 counties of Northern Ireland remained under Protestant British rule as part of the agreement. Not all Irish agreed with this set up, especially the Irish living in Northern Ireland. There has been conflict till this day between those loyal to the Republic of Ireland in the north and south parts who want total Irish rule versus those who are loyal to the British rule in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland remains one of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom who represent themselves in various sporting tournaments.

Belgium were shockingly bad ! They aint going to win it playing like that. Lukaku's touch was dreadful and he should have been subbed at half time, he was never in the game. Was that really the same DeBruyne?? On that evidence Ireland shouldn't be too worried, especially as Wales got some good results out of them too.

On the other boot Italy were brilliant, not your typical Italian performance except in defence where they were pretty solid.

I thought it was another good game, Belgium could have scored a couple and to be honest the first Italian goal was pure luck (OK he may have meant to do it but getting a pass that accurate is 1 in 100 stuff) so again it could have gone either way, still no walk overs in the tournament so far. Bodes well for the knock out stages.
