Hi

Not sure if anyone else has a theory or simply knows, but why do some of the Empire line have odd leg poses ? By example Luke Hoth and Bespin guard figures, seem to have a way of standing that suggests they have one leg shorter / longer than the other...

Just one of those stupid random things I feel I need to purge from my brain !

Cheers

Be thankful they didnt go down the route they did for the raiders of the lost ark line with 2 point articulation arms/legs. As this was done one year before kenner did the esb line.

Copy pasting this from an old RS thread on the same subject:

Having personally met with the sculptor of Walrusman, Luke Hoth, and BBSG a few times I can tell you that it was intentional and he was a bit of a rebel by doing it. He simply wanted to make the figures less "stuff" looking which is what engineering wanted since it would reduce potential molding problems. Believe it or not it was a big deal at the time and he said he did take some flak for it. However, the poses were subtle enough so they went with it.

This is also the guy that sculpted his daughter Emily's name into the snake on the Dagobah playset tree and he even sculpted his own name onto the tail of the Tauntaun, but it's subtle and you have to know what to look for. No, I won't tell you. He also sculpted his face into the Dagobah base, but the mold maker caught it and polished it out. So close!

They could have done better, but the sculptors were limited by the cost of the final product. They were there not to be artists with freedom, but to translate a movie character into plastic at a predetermined cost. They actually did not like SW figures because they were so boring. Ghostbusters on the otherhand they really liked because of the action features.

The figures had to come from simplest (thus cheapest) of molds that's why every figure is straight-limbed and stiff. To do fancy shapes with undercuts and whatnot the molds would require slides and other expensive features. This was the #1 killer for detail and intricacy.

They were also limited by deco constraints. They only got a few colors per figure. That even translated into modern days. The old school Kenner guys would look at what McFarlane could do with molds and painting and wish they were allowed that freedom. Although McFarlane isn't immune to cost because their toys notoriously came apart. There's always tradeoffs in business.

Kenner's sculptors were talented, but their company was maximizing profits and they had to work within a small window. That's the bottom line. And when they did try to get creative, they'd catch flak from engineering. Like when the guy put bends into the legs of Walrusman, Luke Hoth, and Black Bespin Guard. Just to add some life-like stances to the figures. Believe it or not, he was pushing the limits.

One of the most interesting gems about production i've ever read!

My cousin was into Action Force/GI Joe and I was into Star Wars. He used to royally take the piss out of the Star Wars 'stiff' stance. Never phased me, but maybe he had a point!

I think the fact that they did not have the articulation that other toy lines at the time had paid dividends today as they look so much better on display than say MAC men / action force / he man / micro men but I am still a fan of micro and MAC, and I never remember thinking as a kid that sw figs were not as good as the other lines don't think it ever entered my mind :)

Great thread, really interesting. I did think
The BBG and Luke Hoth had quite a thaetrical stance. You can almost imagine Luke saying "Forsooth! What white daemon of hair and claws appeareth before me in this godforsaken world of snow and ice?" Instead of "**** me! A Wampa!"

This reminded me of Blackadder the 3rd, the episode with the OTT actors -

"Rrrrrroooarrr! ...Ben ...Ben? Leia ...hear me!"

:p

 Great episode! Macbeth has never been mentioned more within a 30 minute period.
