I believe that ebay charge a stupid amount and then you get refunded the excess which is determined later

I doubt that Richard, the global shipping program is a big scam. It charges pre advanced custom fees, while you might not even be stung by custom feed if you have it shipped in a regular way.
I avoid auctions which work with the global shipping program.

When I was first 'forced' to join the GSP I was contacted by a buyer because his invoice was outrageous. I contacted ebay to see if I could bypass the GSP as I could ship for far less. They explained he would be refunded the excess once actual shipping was calculated after the initial invoice was paid. I may still have a copy of the correspondence somewhere.

Actually I'm a big fan of it. Some sellers flat-out refuse to either ship to the UK at all or under-declare the value, so in that case it's better than nothing. Also I prefer to know the exact amount upfront rather than waiting for the customs form. I'm fairly sure it works out less due to Royal Mail's £8 handling fee. Finally it doesn't get held up at customs, it gets delivered straight to your door with tracking. I hate waiting weeks for the lazy Royal Mail bastards to decide how much they are going to charge you.
The cost of the GSP shipping is done entirely on weight, so personally I have often found it much cheaper than USPS from America. If you think it's too high, ask the seller to amend the weight.

I'm not a fan, I've only used it a few times and its been considerably slower, more expensive in terms of actual shipping and custom fees and the items haven't been that well packed. Ebay of course weren't interested as the whole programme is designed to make them money not improve customer service.

Bloody hell. Just been contacted by a guy who says that the GSP left 1 calling card at his house and when he went to collect the item they returned it back to me by mistake. From bloody Spain!!! I can see this going badly.

I was looking at an ungraded R2 12 Back that was a good price if not for GSP. I asked seller if he could bypass this and send it straight to me. He said no because-
"Less liability and convenience. I have had things returned by the receiving country before it even go to the buyer. Once I give to the Global Shipping processing center they have responsibility for everything and if something happens between the processing center and the buyer - lost, damaged, returned, they cover the charges. I also don't have to worry about the customs forms and I don't have to go to the post office. If items are shipped within the USA they pick up for free. International packages have to be processed in person."

A lot of US sellers seem to want to sell an item for $xxxx but not go to the post office. What do they think the rest of the world generally has to do? I passed on an £800 item the other day which sits unsold because they will only use the GSP.

Taking what Edd said about it being better than nada in some cases into account, I'm still no fan.
Recently I bought 2 items from one seller and he wasn't able to combine shipping through the GSP so I had to pay shipping from the US twice, absolute load of bollox. Then again, I wanted the items so it was indeed better than nada.
For big ticket items I always have the item sent to a Stateside buddy so the customs form can be marked down.
