Did they ever release.......

I was indeed a 70's child Gary.
Born in Newcastle 73, and I think it was 79 when we moved to Shropshire.
It seems like there was certainly quite a bit of randomness in how the toys were distributed.
I do remember clearly that when I went up to Newcastle, as a kid I would see things that I couldn't get in Shrewsbury.

Am I to take it that the Kenner Death Star was actually available in some places in this country then?

That's a good point. I remember in the early to mid 80s whenever i went on holiday to Devon or Wales (privileged upbringing me), i'd hit the toy shops to see what different figures they had. You'd always find stuff you couldn't find in London and vice-versa.

I agree with edd that the 'kitch' style of the early line is what makes the toys so unique. The likes of the cantina aliens for example aren't even accurate in many aspects, Greedo's vest, the scale of hammerhead and even the early confusion of the Snaggletooths. Vader is a classic example of inaccurate sculpting, heck - he towers over everyone in the films, yet is as skinny as a rake! This is what makes them so cool.
I think much of it is down to how quickly they could get the toys out at the time, coupled with early sculpt and production techniques.

Later muscle packed lines were truly terrible, think POTF2....just awful!
Additions that I would have liked to see both now and as a kid would be....
1. Bantha could have been produced similar to the Dewback, prob using the same sculpt as chewies fur! This would have led to loads of play options along with armies of sandpeople and the landspeeder etc.

2. FLEET TROOPER!!! why oh why was this never released???????

3. I'm being picky now, but I think the droid factory could have been added to the Sand crawler to create the lineup for Luke and Uncle Owen.

Great thread

Totally agree Snaggle.
That naive styling of the first 20 make them far cooler than any Jedi figure today.
I wonder if they'd have known at the time they'd be setting out their stall for another 77 characters, if they'd have put a bit more effort in and spoilt it.

As for the POTF2, enough said!
Like an idiot I bought 2 of each at the time thinking, ah ha, I know what I'm doing here.
I don't think you can even give them away now.

Bantha, yep that would have been great.

Totally agree with you on the bantha!!

I've never quite understood what the imperial attack base was. It made sense that it would be the rebel trenches on Hoth, so was always confused why they sold an Imperial Hoth base!!

I just wanted more Droids and Ewoks figures. Im going to have to win the lottery to get the second set and probably have to get the missing ones custom

the obvious missing figure would have to be 'baps out leia', after all, they even put a bloody leash on jabba's throne.
had they have made a vintage leia slave, they could have done a mail away for han with eyes on extending storks

Yep,, it annoyed me too as it wasnt in the film and it didnt even fit with the story,, the other thing is the size of the snowspeeder i used to bring my speeder over to a mtes house who had an AtAt and he would do the speeder getting stomped on by the At At and i would complain that in the movie the speeder fit under the foot and was crushed.. oh what a nerd i was

I always used the imperial attack base as the rebel trenches, next to the turret/probot playset. Threw in a radar laser canon, the MLC, a couple of Taun Tauns and the Snow Speeder, then I could have a proper mini hoth battle!! 8)
