Did anybody 'collect' first time round?

If anyone saw my collection they would probably be suprised at the condition of some of my loose, but they were from my childhood and worth more than a AFA90 to me anyday.

Yup same here. Ended up with about 150 figures, about half survived complete with accessories, which I used to keep inside Jabba's throne! Consider myself damn lucky to still have 99% of my childhood collection, favourite piece is my battered old Falcon - it may not look like much but she's got it where it counts!

Could be a while until I get a limelight sorted, so here's a quick pic of my haul from back in the day..

There's also the Taun tauns, Imperial troop transport, mini-rigs and some other stuff like comics etc. No boxes survived but about 50 backers did, mostly Jedi and Tri cards. I suppose I did 'collect' first time round in that if I had a figure and managed to get a second, I'd put the better one aside for display. Also bought and traded with other kids to build little armies and extras.

As a parent myself, I realise how awesome my childhood was and I treasure my old stuff!

I would dare say any of them that have"G.M.F.G.I" are the first issue one as General Mills owned Kenner briefly at the start of the line...thus the General Mills Fun group.

I agree about the G.M.F.G.I although I was more wondering about how the information has been printed on the figures as there seems to be a lot of different ways these coo's were printed.
I get the feeling that the first 20 should have a slightly more standard way that their coo info is displayed although when it comes to Palitoy A and B backs they'll probably differ. I know for instance that the Luke A back's Lightsaber has a flat chiseled tip where the thin tip comes out of and the B back has a more rounded tip and is made from a stronger yellow coloured plastic. That said though I bet there are examples out there still carded that differ.
It sounds like another good reason for the owners of the first 20 MOC's to take some close up pictures of the weapons (gentle hint).

Nice childhood haul! You had way more than I did although my favourite piece was my cardboard Death star. I used to play with that all the time and it inspired me to build my own play sets in the back garden with bits of scrap wood my Dad had. I remember them looking pretty good (well I was young), although I'm not so sure the cardboard ATAT I built (more in scale to the action figures than the released one), was ever going to win any competitions.

Nah, at that age it never even crossed my mind to collect, i didnt even look after them, i buried them, left them in the conifers, even used a lighter and burnt bits of my at-at to look like blaster damage.

Thats the way it should be.

Me and my brother still have every figure & weapon from the first time around. If I ever get round to taking pics I think you may be a little shocked about the condition of them as they are all still pretty minty. Don't get me wrong we played with them all the time but were very careful about our figs. Apart from one R2 that got stuck down a Swingball hole and left down there for a year.

We also still have our comics, portfolios, books. etc. Our Dad did want to get rid of them in the mid 80s but we said they would be worth something in the future.....pretty shrewd for two 11 year olds

This sounds encouraging! So did you get the first 20 all off of Star Wars logo'd cards? If so it would be great to see a picture of the backs of their legs where the coo is and also close ups of their weapons.

I realise it's a bit of an ask as it will take time but I'm sure there's plenty of people out there who'd love to see them.

Sorry but if I haven't photographed them after 30 years I doubt its going to happen any time soon :D

I still have alot of my figures which I had as a kid. I would say the majority of my loose figure collection are originals from when I was wee. Also the majority of my loose vehicles are also my own original toys.

When I became interested in collecting Star Wars the second time round (about 1995) I got more pleasure in completing vehicle and figures with loose parts and weapons, than I did from buying something brand new and sparkling. It felt right to be restoring the old toys back to their former glory as a 'thank you' for all the pleasure they gave me when I was a kid.

As a trader, I get the most excitment from seeing good condition toys I remember back in the day than some rare piece which is worth £££. Luckily this works for me as I then dont mind selling them without the sinking feeling of missing out.

I'd be happier with my collection I used to own as well. I know they were played with a lot but it also would be more important to have the ones that were mine than the mint ones I own now which were probably hardly touched. Also I would know they're from the Star Wars days and not a farm boy Luke off a Jedi card, not quite the same for me.

That's an interesting point - but the opposite for me. When I first put together a loose collection, many of the figures didn't quite feel or look right. After a while I realised this was because most of the loose figures in circulation are American/Kenner, and the figures I had as a kid would mostly have come off of tri logo cards. I'm not sure of the exact differences, but tri logo/Palitoy figures seemed to use different paint/colours.

The only figure I have from my childhood collection is Warus Man, I do have a few vehicles though...

An AT AT Walker, Slave 1, Millenium falcon, Rebel transport, an AT ST Wlaker and a few battered minirigs.

I collected in the sense that I wanted them all, but not to display, more too play and destroy!

That's the thing for some of us, it's all about what you had as a child. For me it's about the first ones to hit UK shops but for others it's going to be from a different time and their memories will be of the different card issues.
It's funny how I can look at a graded 90 Large head Han and see that it's from Jedi or something like that just by the look of the flesh on his neck. It's all about what we remember growing up......well maybe for some of us anyway and that's no disrespect to those who collected later on, it's just my personal preference.

I had nothing. My SW went to family friends, what was left anyway as most was lost or broken. No idea what happened to my MOTU. I left home at 14 so didn't really have a say in where most of my stuff went.

I remember as a kid my friend Barry collecting matchbox cars and never opened any and I remember thinking that was weird :) not seen him since we left school, but wouldn't surprise me if he still collected them :)

Ian/Ed

I know this is an old thread, but i've only just stumbled across it.

Ed: I played with all my figures, but kept loads of the cardbacks. I don't seem to have any of the cardbacks that i cut the name plates out of though. I stopped colllecting before the power of the force / last 17 came out. When star wars was becoming less popular a friend went round all the local toy shops and bought up the figures & mini rigs on the cheap. He kept all of these in their packaging as he was to old to play with them. He still has loads of stuff, I recently got given loads of loose big ships by him - they are in loads better condition than my childhood played with toys.

Ian: I've still got my entire c/h collection minus a few weapons and minus whatever broke or was lost. Ill try and look up some of the markings from the first 20, but its never really as simple as that because of how collections are formed: My 1st ever figure was chewy, which my dad got me from the US of A. Most of my figures were bought at 'Goldies' my local toy shop. However in my early childhood collecting days i acquired a family friends collection. He had some connection with America and his collection had some stuff i hadn't come across before. In my later childhood collecting days i swapped a Play people pirate ship for my friends entire Star Wars collection!

I've still got a few cardbacks from the first 20, but i don't know whether the figures i have are the ones from those cardbacks or others i picked up during my childhood.

I'll now go and look at the markings on the backs of those figures, but im not sure how much it will help, for example I know i have at least 2 Jawas in my collection. Anyway I hope this will help in some way

Paul

Like most, the second I got a figure or vehicle as a kid, the box/blister was ripped open, packaging thrown away, and within half an hour the weapons would be lost  But did anybody here buy carded/boxed vehicles for display, and keep them that way? Even if you don't own the same ones any more?
I've got a similar question and wondered if anyone out there has still got their figures from when they were a child? My question is a bit more specific though as I'm asking for anyone who had their figures from when they were released 1st in 78?
I'd really love to know what coo makings were on their Palitoy first 20.

I think I may have slightly highjacked this thread so sorry and also let me know if this fits in with your question or if you'd rather I start a new thread.

Cheers - Ian
I don't think the image of the cardbacks appeared above, so i've tried again
Snaggletooth, Pailtoy 20 Cardback: Fig says GMFGI. 1978 Hong Kong
Greedo, Palitoy 20 Cardback: Fig says GMFGI. 1978 Hong Kong
C-3PO, Palitoy 12 Cardback: Fig says GMFGI. 1977 Hong Kong
Luke Skywalker, Kenner 12 Cardback (Bought in UK for £1.35 from Goldie): Fig says GMFGI. 1977. Hong Kong
Jawa, Kenner 20 Cardback (I Assume bought in UK?): One jawa says: GMFGI. 1977. Hong Kong. The other Jawa says the same but with a bigger font size

I don't think this is telling us anything though as i've just looked at Leia Organa: Figure says GMFGI. 1977. Hong Kong, but she was bought years after. Her cardback is a Return of the Jedi from France or Beligum

I hope this is helpful

I don't have a thing left from when i was a kid. I don't even remember opening the figures and ships to be honest. Must have just been a frantic ripping session to get to the gold inside :D

God knows what happened to the At-At pictured in my profile picture :?

Thanks for posting all that information, it's great to see although it would be good to see a picture of the markings on the legs of the Palitoy ones. There are quite a few reference sights on the coo's and there are loads of different ways the coo's are printed for each figure so it would interest me to see which version coo's you have.

I understand that it's a bit of work to do this so no worries if you don't have time but cheers again for looking into this.
