CSG grading? + General Grading company discussion!

Some fair points Jay but UKG did do some extensive leg work , Andy already mentioned it would take a few years to even get known and build up a supply of decent submissions to be turning a profit for the company and paying for staff/equipment and ultimately a bigger premises.

Who here is honestly up for striving and striving for 4+ years to get close to UKG (let's face it thats your first target because AFA is no way going to suffer from another grading company)

From a potential customers view I wouldn't take the risk on sending things in to get graded by yet another small grading company when the chances of them going under is quite high, therefore making my newly graded MOC or figure nothing more than a figure in a box , grading common items is done to inflate the price a bit so that means dealers/traders which ultimately won't send items in if it isn't going to increase the value for resale.

Anyone wanting to grade something for authentication is going to need to be won over by a history and some real experience / big names otherwise they won't trust you.

I am not saying its impossible to start up a company like UKG, quite the contrary I could set up a website tomorrow and wait for my first carded figure to drop through the post, what I am trying to get across is that even with a company name, a team, a place to grade, the experience to grade items from all over the world and maintain a great service you wouldn't be able to do compete from day one and you would probably fail trying.

Creating a company and being a successful one are two different things.

I agree with all the points raised really....but....lets say in our case we did decide to compete, we would have a vast headstart over two people, we could accumulate a lot of intrest amongst both forums, we have website designers a PM away, and the only issue from my end would be cases.

Yeah ok it would be a long shot, but with all the knowledge, skills and spare time (yes my job means sitting on my ass a lot) it could be done, and it would have a very strong base of knowledge and numerous followers from the start, which UKG didnt have.

Not knovking the UKG at all, they have done a great job and im not suggesting we displace them, but i think it could be done, it would take a year or so for any benefit and the end product would have to be exceptional.

More of a dream than reality because it aint gonna happen, but it could be done and i think it could be done quite well :)

If anyone were to go for it then I would be interested in watching the outcome for sure, I wouldn't knock anyone for trying but I think it is better to look at the obstacles before anyone starts out rather than encounter them as they progress and get cold feet on the whole thing.

I think everyone knows it would be hard work and would need a very strong team of dedicated people to keep it going.

Apart from the easy stuff (settling on a name, a grading scale and designing a website) you would need to invest some cash equally, then who would own the business , would it be a partnership, or 1-2 bosses with the rest being graders etc. (would you pay people more based on expertise? would they work for free in the beginning) I guess there are 101 things that would need to be looked at on paper first before even beginning.

The best people to answer many of these questions and to offer some valuable input would be Steve from UKG himself!
