cricket stuff

Been asking for it for a long long time!

The problem is Bangladesh being so ****. They got it mainly because of the pressure from India/Pakistan/SL who saw letting them in as a chance to cement their power base. They get Test status and then prove to be little more than whippings boys. That in itself diminishes the desire to add more teams to the Test roster. I fully understand not wanting to demean Test match cricket. It is the pinnacle of the game, and should be protected. The problem is you are in a catch 22 situation. How are Ireland, or any other wannabe Test standard team supposed to reach Test match standard if they aren't even allowed to play 5 day games? They have to make do with games against other non Test teams and the very rare one day or T20 game against a test side. In effect, Ireland are expected to reach Test match level by playing teams who aren't good enough for Test match level in a different format to Test matches. That's just never going to happen.

Here Andy Murray, warm up for Wimbledon by playing games against your granny on my driveway. Now go compete on an even level with Nadal/Djokevic.

The ICC talk, laudably, about wanting to expand the interest in cricket, but how can you do that whilst denying teams access to the pinnacle of the game? "Come play our sport, it's really good. PS, you'll be worthy of playing the top level!"

This is why I think the 2 tier test system is best. The top tier stay as it is, then you introduce a second tier, Ireland, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe (politics aside), maybe Bangladesh and a couple of others (Holland, Scotland etc). That way they get to play tests and they get a little experience against the bigger boys. Be it through a promotion relegation system (most probably a play-off to allow the bottom ranked top tier side maximum opportunity to stay up, or if you want that another way, to minimise any chance of a lesser nation earning the right to play the big boys), or by the odd one off test here and there. I fully expect the one off tests, or wonder of wonders a two test "series" to be against the reserves or B-teams of the big test sides. I also expect the snobs/wankers, Beefy I'm looking at you, to deride anything any of these Tier two teams do as "Only tier 2 cricket" BUT it is a start and the only realistic way anyone has of getting near Test level.

The alternative is to wait for Ireland/Afghanistan etc to magically develop 11 test match players out of thin air!

What so Andrew Strauss he heard calling Kevin Pietersen a **** and keeps his job?!

strauss is just jealous. kp has an ego, but hes englands highest run scorer, and has an imense talent and should be in the team, i dont care if hes not a team player when your worldclass player you deserve a spot.

I don't know. I have played competitive sport at a decent level (not far off international) and if you have one guy in the dressing room who is constantly ****ing everyone else off it really does make a massive difference.
Granted dropping KP was a big call. He is England's most talented player, even though he's not English, and the team is undoubtedly weaker on paper but it may well be behind the scenes his position was untenable. We'll never really know. Well, until all the books come out.

Regardless, whether it's his fault or the management's fault, it is a shame that the public don't get to see him play international cricket.

That was pish.

But, look at it like this, you're about a hundred runs behind which is pretty much what the Indian last wicket pair added. Had you managed to get them out, and the last wicket adding 100 is freakishly unusual, you would be pretty much neck and neck.

Saying that the confidence in that team must be low. Cook couldn't buy luck ATM and Matt Prior got a stinker, though so did one of the Indian top order (name escapes me).

The small things are all going against England ATM, but those collapses are worrying. That's where you need a Collingwood or someone to dig in.

This is an alarming stat

England's collapses in past eight Tests
8-54 & 7-49
v Australia, Brisbane, Nov 2013
6-24
v Australia, Adelaide, Dec 2013
6-61 & 4-17
v Australia, Perth, Dec 2013
6-53 & 5-6
v Australia, Melbourne, Dec 2013
5-17 & 4-8
v Australia, Sydney, Jan 2014
6-75
v Sri Lanka, Lord's, June 2014
5-18
v Sri Lanka, Headingley, June 2014
6-68
v India, Trent Bridge, July 2014

Australia had Mitchell Johnson in the form if his life on home turf. So those can be excused a bit. The home ones against a very average SL and today on what was a road (look at how well india's no.s 9&11 batted) are very poor.

Fair play to Jimmy, Root and Broad but we really need the top order to do their job.

What a Incredible morning! Jimmy still there on 81!

And you jinxed him!

Amazing effort. What odds on both last wickets being record stands? Really does put the efforts of the other top order batsmen in context. Saying that, it's late afternoon on day four and India are just starting their second innings. Bar a massive collapse the game is headed for a very dull draw. Good for the coffers of the ECB and nottinghamshire, but not great for those of us who want to actually see a contest.

So England require 319 to win. Exactly the amount we amassed in the 1st Innings

I think we will do it with 1 wicket to spare. Jimmy hits the winning runs. You saw it here first
