Managing to get £20 million for a player who is a good Premiership player, but far from world class, is some achievement

I really don't see why Rafa has just blown all that money on him, especially considering what he spent on Torres last summer!
If he wanted another striker why not put a bid in for David Villa before the Euro champs? He was available for £14 million at the end of the season, and Rafa (along with Fergy and Chelsea) have been keping tabs on him for years now!
He's a better player than Keane, younger than Keane, cheaper than Keane, and knows how to play along side Torres!

Don't get me wrong I think Robbie Keane is a good player, just not worth £20.3 million quid, half that............MAYBE!
Besides that, the Liverpool squad needs wide midfield players, not another striker.
Crouchy was already a good enough reserve striker, and offered a "Plan B" that you won't get with Robbie Keane. If you wanna flog a striker why not get rid of that porn star Voronin!?

This is where Craig comes in and says how he thinks Keane is gonna be brilliant at Liverpool next season!

Keane has the advantage of being a proven goal scorer in the Prem. I think he'll probably play from the left in the same way that Kuyt plays from the right with Gerrard through the middle and all supporting Torres. That way we can switch between 4-3-3 and 4-5-1 instantly depending on the situation. I don't think Rafa is looking to go down the 4-4-2 with wingers route. Keane has also shown he can play well with pacey intelligent stikers (Berbatov) so he may be the perfect foil for Torres. It is a lot of money though.

Voronin will be gone by the time the season starts.

As for Villa, perhaps with so many teams scouting him for so long but not bidding then they may feel that he may not fit into the prem. He could come over here for 30 million and then be completely average or get knocked off the ball all the time.

Robbie keane cant be worth that silly money

It is a bit of a gamble but I guess that Rafa has figured out that he will be out on his arse if we do bugger all again this season so he may as well go for broke.

I agree 20.3 million is a lot of money but that's the premier league for you. As for David Villa he was never valued at 14 million. His value was put at 20 million, But once Rafa showed some interest, Valencia quoted Liverpool 30 million. Not only that but he also stated he wanted to remain in La Liga.
If his value was 14 million, Chelski would of snapped valencia's hand off.
I agree Liverpool do need some quality wide men but they are a pretty rare breed these days.
I just hope Rafa decides to give the league a real go this season and hope he drops the rotation policy.
As for keane, he always gave Spurs 100%[and as long as he does the same for Liverpool Iam sure he will be a hit./color]

You said it !!

I've wanted him at Anfield for years and now we have finally got him!! 8) Yes he is overpriced for his age, personally I would have said 15M tops (same for Barry) but we keep spending money on kids with "potential", most of whom will probably never get into the first team but now we have a proven Premier League goal scorer and creator.

David Villa was never available for 14M before the Euros, that's just paper talk otherwise he would already have gone to one of the big clubs plus Valencia don't want to sell him anyway despite the alledged money problems.

I'm sure Rafa would have liked to have signed Villa but he doesn't like to play a system of 2 similar style strikers otherwise Torres and Babel would have played a lot more games as a strike force last season whereas Keane is a totally different player.

We've needed a "winger" since McManaman left but decent ones are hard to find, that's why most teams use attatcking full backs these days which is what Degen and Dossena are. Even at Man United, Ronaldo is supposed to be a winger but he has a free role and instead Evra spends most of the game bombing forward !!

Guys David Villa WAS available for £14 million before the Euro Champs!
Valencia even admitted they would probably have sold him had they received an offer around that figure. Thing is everyone was waiting until after the Euros and now they gotta pay twice that.

As for wide midfield players, I guess your right. There aren't many decent ones about. Although is that not where you hope your scouts find someone!?

I still think £20 million could have been better spent, David Bentley for a start!

It's typical Spanish politcs / paper talk, one minute Real have no interest in Ronaldo and the next they do etc !!

Valencia have said for the last 2 or 3 years that Villa is not for sale, if he was one of the top sides in Spain or England would have taken a gamble by now and he's always said he's flattered other sides are interested in him but he is happy to stay where he is.

Individually Torres and Villa played well in the Euro's but I didn't see much potential in them as a strike force. A few years ago we had two of the best goal scorers around in Owen and Fowler but even they weren't a success in the same team.

Ehh Valencia are nearly 800 million Euro in debt!
I think if anyone had come along and offered them sensible money for Villa they would have taken it. I think he would have jumped at the chance to leave as well. FFS the club has had two Sporting Directors this month alone, had three managers last season (assuming you count Ronald Koeman as a 'manager'), it has a Presdient who makes Peter Ridsdale look like the shrewdest man the world has ever seen and they went from UEFA cup and La Liga winners, double champions league beaten finalists to avoiding relegation by the skin of their teeth!

As for Fowler and Owen, your kinda right. Although, Owen's game was always based on speed and picking up through balls fed up to him. Whereas Fowler is more of a natural/instinctive finisher. So they weren't exactly the ideal combination.
Saying that is there a player out there who had more unfulfilled potential than Robbie Fowler? From '95-'99 he was about the best finisher in the league, and then just when he should have been hitting his physical and peak, and his theoretical prime, his career just sort fo stalled!
The only other player who I can think who comes close is Lee Sharpe. Even that's debateable.
He never hit the heights Robbie Fowler did, certainly not as consistently (insert your own drugs joke).
Just re-reading this, I realise Robbie Fowler's career started to die about the same time Michael Owen's started to take off, coincidence?

As for Villa and Torres I didn't see enough of them during the Euro's to comment on how well they would work together. But I stand by what I said, I would rather Benitez had spent his money on Villa as he's a much better player, and a lot younger as well.

Bentley fancies himself a bit too much for my liking. Everyone raves about him but he would look rubbish in a decent side. I guess he would be the kind of player Spurs like, young, English, potential and then ultimately disappointing. Spurs have had a succession of such players like that. eg: Wayne Routledge.

I saw Bentley play at Anfield a About three years ago when he was on loan at Norwich. He had a awful match. Was expecting a bit more from him, even then. Wenger didnt rate him that's why he sold him to Blackburn. He did the same with Pennant when he sold him to Birmingham. I am not sure Rafa would make that mistake again. Does put in some decent crosses and free kicks now and again but for me is not Liverpool quality.

Rafa has been at the club for 4 years now and is under pressure to at least make us serious challengers for the league title and needs players who have proved they can be successful in England. Villa is a good player but we don't know how much Valencia want for him, would he be an immediate success like Torres or will he take a year to adapt? We don't know and Rafa may not have had the time to find out with all the ownership issues with Hicks and Gillett and potentially DIC so I think he has made the right move to sign someone who maybe 28 but is a genuine fan of the club and is desperate to win trophies as we saw by his reaction to winning the Carling Cup a few months ago plus he will fit straight into his formation. 8)

Valencia are hugely in debt (like most clubs) but selling their best asset won't come close to wiping out any of the debt and will only reduce the value of the club to potential investors. If they were so desperate to sell him for 14M two months ago why would they now put a huge price on his head to put off buyers now?

They valued him at £14 million before the Euro's, now they are trying to cash in and have doubled his value.

As for Keane, I still think there are better strikers we could have bought. He may have Premiership experience, but so does Kevin Davies and he wouldn't help us win the league!
I guess we'll see what happens come May.

spurs are supposed to be buying arshavin and pavlyuchenko. arshavin for £19m ( less than keane) and pavlyuchenko for £15m. i think both these lads would hav been a better buy for liverpool . arshavin is younger and quicker than keane, and although all the euro talk was about arshavin, i think pavlyuchenko will be the better buy .

Both very good players, although with them I would worry about it taking a while for them to settle. Both because of the football and also the culture shock (I think they both play in Russia still).
