Boring post alert...

I'm renewing my home insurance and am tagging on insurance for my collection. Its modest by the standards of many on here, but I think some insurance is needed.

Before I buy this cover (through Hiscox FYI) has anybody used a specialist insurer for their collection?

Max, I would simply notify your current insurer that you have a vintage toy collection with an approximate value of whatever£ and ask them to make a recorded note of that with your records. It may be that your policy already has contents cover of £75k or some amount which would be sufficient. But best to make a quick call to your insurer.

Hi Max, do a search here for similar threads. The most recent one had some good replies and if I recall right, a forum member works in insurance and gave good advise.

I used a specialist broker Greenfield insurance

Any other attempt through other brokers met with confusions and much higher premiums.

My home insurance company outright refused to cover my collection and wrote in the contract that it was not covered!

As a quick update, my current insurers (John Lewis Insurance) said they consider collectables (I specified toys) as 'contents' and therefore you have unlimited cover (they don't put a £ amount on) for loss or damage, without specifying anything individually. This was included as standard!

With my experience in the collectable toy industry Max, the best thing to do is to photograph all your items just in case you ever have a claim.
There used to be a few insurance companies for collectable toys who advertised in all the collectable toy magazines but I havnt seen any for a while now.

Whoever you use, it is pot luck really and how much and how quick any of them pay out is just the same as with any policies.

I personally offer full written valuations on many types of collectable toys if they are ever needed for insurance purposes, divorce settlements and bereavements, of course we do charge a fee to cover admin costs, so my offer is always there if you need it.

On another note hopefully Oscar hasnt left a mess on a 12 back :D
