Clearing out my parents' house...

Yeah it would have got my ****ing back up too to. Chewy's reaction was WAY over the top and completely off base. I don't think there has been a valuation thread with some half decent stuff that hasn't resulted in someone making an offer or merely expressing interest with the old "nice ESB Moc... i'd be interested if you're selling"... on top of that, for Joe to actually omit a valuation in the interest of fairness makes the comments even more absurd. Whether Joe offered a fair price for the Jawa CB or not is an entirely different argument and nothing to do with anything said on this thread so cannot be called into reason for explaining Chewy's rather bizarre outburst.

To finish, tho i'm not sure i'm seeing the point, if there are members who believe that offers or expressed interest of any kind should be banned from valuation threads, and may i add that that has never for a second been the case or even the understanding or practice here, ever, then that may well be something that should be discussed. Because to until such a rule is in place one could be forgiven for assuming such, common place behaviour, is within the rules and realms of what is right here.

Well, if chewy has buggered off then what can I say... :|

Interestingly the flip side of people offering money on items in this section of the forum is that no-one agreeing on the point of view that it's not on if we offer money to people seeking valuations would actually tell someone who went straight into the sales section and was giving away their stuff that their prices were too low. People would just buy and do it quickly. I doubt anyone would disagree with that, it happens time and time again even with seasoned collectors - they sell some bits, state a price and in come the first people to notice the post and it's all gone.

In fact it's the same on ebay, people applaud other members for snagging a cheap buy it now on ebay that was just listed yet it's suddenly against the law to offer someone some money to someone on here (which they can say no to and ask around for advice on!) hell there are collectors on all the forums that cruise ebay all day long hoping to catch a cheap item to flip or to keep..

Actually, and I mean this - I think everyone that posts here asking for help and gets a few offers has a better understanding of how popular certain items are that they have, especially if they get multiple offers. Someone will eventually place a value on the items publicly or point to a place where prices can be found - then the seller looks at the offers + the valuation advice and works the value out.

Maybe some basic guidelines wouldn't go amiss for the people that haven't got a clue-

1. Never accept the first offer
2. Ask around with other members if they feel the offer is ok
3. Do your homework if given links / valuations
4. Don't piss me off by slagging me in chat :D

Ok, fair, the Jawa was bought into this thread. I took it as a tongue in cheek comment. But everything else i said (the other 98% :p ) i can firmly stand by.

I mentioned the Jawa so people were aware I was playing by the new rules that were just put in place since it has been deemed against the law to offer anyone money here on an item they want

From now on if I want something I am going to send an SOS for someone else to value it publicly :)

Well what the **** happened in this thread? Anyway Joe mentioned interest in the Fett. I'd love one in my collection, I gave it a fair public valuation ( quite a broad valuation- Tri fetts go for 30 -70+ pounds) - I've been known to buy the odd variant here and there  Thought I called 2nd dibs :) It went up for sale & I missed out

Not sure what the solution is to keeping everyone happy re valuation threads, PM offers , acceptable difference between buyers & sellers valuation....

re jawa cardback- the last 2 I knew about were 56 pounds & $100 on RS. 21 back stormy, Anakin POTF & offerless ESB 4LOM was $200 & change for all 3 yesterday (the same 3 went for slightly less on ebay a few months ago) so a 30-40 pound starting offer isn't rude IMO.

I just noticed Chewy's 'bum chum' remark  WTF ?? So my Tri Fett valuation became 45 pounds ono sounds like I got the value OK? I would have paid $100,

OK so best price on RS, market value, collectors value, decent price if you were the seller, fair price as a buyer, ebay completed price, bargain vs buy it now price can be the difference between $15 & $150 so there's no clear cut right or wrong valuation!

70% of 56 is 40 - not a lowball ?

There's been a few valuation threads that I've publically mentioned lowish (lowball) values knowing others wanted them- is that OK?

To clear up any doubt on a few things-

AussieJames' valuation was not only fair given the condition of the weapon less Boba Fett but he is a variation hunter himself, if anyone knows how odd the variation market is it's him. I am not so much of a variation nut I stick to carded mostly but I am more than 100% sure that not only do variations sell for different prices all day long but that there is also no guaranteed set in stone price someone is willing to pay for any figure at any time, we tend to stick to brackets of high and low based on what we see them sell for, so anything in the middle is a decent price. When it comes to variants - 95% of collectors think paying 4-5 times a normal figures value is nuts, yet some variant hunters do because they want it, it's personal preference and choice on how much you decide you are comfortable with paying for something.

There is no right or wrong valuation in many cases, some might be low, some might be high, end of the day it can take a lot of work to get an amazing price for your item, even we as collectors have trouble getting back our investments at times.

Not to mention that almost everyone that comes on here are not ONLY looking for valuations they are looking to sell their items, if they didn't want a pool of collectors to take the stuff off their hands they wouldn't come here.

Like I said before, people can refuse offers regardless of knowing the market or not and interest in an item will only be good for their sales in the long run.

I think all the prices Martin priced his items at were really fair for both sides to be honest. Some sold some didn't - he can always come down on the items that didn't :)

I do not know what all the fuss is about to be honest and it is a shame that Chewy has decided to leave.

When people come on here and ask for a valuation, they are getting a free service that in other walks of life they would have to pay for. Generally they get one or two people responding directly and then a couple of others will PM them with offers. Add this together with a simple ebay search and generally most people should get a realistic idea of what their items are worth.

No-one is forcing them to accept these offers and no one is forcing them to accept these valuations. I don't understand why people are getting worked up about this.

For example, the chap with the Jawa Card came on here and asked for some prices. I made him an offer for the whole lot, and to be honest did not pay much attention the the cardbacks. I then broke down everything into individual prices which probably took me the best part of 30 mins. I had hoped to buy the lot for a decent price, keep the items that I needed and flip the rest. My valuations where based around the sort of prices that the seller might get on ebay (less fees ) especially if he had no history of selling these types of items. After all the hoo-ha with the card I have not really heard much back from him and dont expect to.

I would also like to say that Chewy's comments about Joe's 'bum chum' are completely out of order and I think some of the crap levied at him in both this and the Jawa thread are a joke.

I think we have to remember that Joe DID NOT make a financial offer for the Fett. Nor did he PM the guy. Nor did he give a valuation. Even so Joe expressing interest in a figure but suggesting the guy get a valuation before deciding to sell it IS what Chewy saw as unacceptable enough to flip his lid and leave the forum.
I just wanted to make sure we remember the facts of the situation. (not that theres a problem with discussing the issue of offers, pms etc etc)
