Building a loose figure cabinet

My brother in law is a carpenter who specialises in cabinets and display cases and has offered to build me a wall mounted display case for the loose figure run I'm putting together. However, I need to give him the measurements and I dont have anywhere near a full set yet to measure.

I'm going to try and make it a standard poster size, although this might be a little too big. It will be wood, but a satin black finish with the inside sprayed a light yellow, like the cardbacks but a little more subtle.

I'm going to get him to build it for 100 figures (so, 92, plus R2 Sensorscope, R2 solid dome, small head han, blue snagg, brown luke tatooine/bespin and vinyl jawa).

So...

Is EV9D9 the tallest figure? If so, how tall? IG88/Vader must be close too?

Is Gamorean Guard the deepest figure? Powerdroid maybe? Again, how 'deep' are they?

Am I missing anything? I'm not fussed about dianoga or probot or any of the creatures.

I'm wondering if to leave that and Jabba out to keep the cabinet slimline - Feels a bit like cheating though.

Does anybody have the depth of Jabbas thrown and Max rebos piano to hand please?

I don't count Jabba as a figure but would count Max - no logic to that at all :lol:

Thanks Max, took a while to build but so worth it.

Jabba and his throne you'd need 155mm depth and 175mm height, Max Rebo you'd be looking at a minimum of 100mm or 125mm with the section that sticks out depending on how which direction you want it turned.

I know Jabba isn't considered a figure by most but to me he works nicely in a loose display which is why I built mine to include him. CAn't have Salacious Crumb in there without him

Have a look at mine. I made it poster sized, it's 600mm x 800mm and 120mm deep. It's got 5 shelves but there's 6 including the bottom of the cabinet. I've got 2 rows of figures staggered on each shelf, 22 per shelf. Cabinet could fit 132 figures in total which I thought was plenty. And it fits all the tall and fat figures in it no problemo.

I've decided to go for:

7 x 65 cm wide shelves - 455cm of display space, which gives 4.5cm per figure as an average. I should fit 100 figures in on protech stands.

12cm space between shelves (EV9D9 is apparently 12cm and is the tallest figure). The bottom shelf will be 13cm, just in case the measurements are off - han's carbonite block looks bigger too.

I'm keeping it slimline, at 6.5cm deep (internally), so should fit all of the normal figures and the rebo band without the keyboard. Keeping it slim was important to me, due to where it's going to live.

The outside will be black, and the inside will be light yellow - although I'm painting it myself.

I'm looking forward to getting it already! Hopefully I can find some big lots of loose figures to fill it with (I already have all of the SW figures on the way! - just ESB, Jedi and POTF (gulp) to go).

I've pondered this idea for a while know (before I joined up here last year)....I'm a cabinet maker by trade (I make mostly pine furniture eg....wardrobes,break fronts,dressers,draw chests etc...and I work in a fully kitted out joiners shop so access to woodworking machinery isn't a problem.....also the materials (I would use 'birch plywood' as this stuff is good high quality ply it's a 13 layer plywood) is plentiful at my work)....

Hi,

I put a bit of effort into building my own earlier this year. I went for a "modular" design so I can keep adding shelves if I want in the future. I can get 3 figures deep on each shelf if I really need to push it, but depends on how much you want to cram in there. I can give you the measurements/plans of mine if you like for comparison.

Each shelf is tall enough for EV-9D9/Han's Carbonite and you can get the rebo band on there too (though the piano does overhang just a touch). Pictures of the finished display below ...

Thats a cool looking design there mate.....also like you said you can always add to it if/when your collection grows 8) ....for me though if I were to build one it would have to have a door attached like the one already shown in this thread basically to keep the dust out,totally emptying every shelf every other week to dust off each shelf would be a pain in the arse (my house is a dusty house unfortunatly :x )

It would be a good idea and a nice little money maker on the side fella,but unfortunatly I just don't have the spare time to start up a venture like this i'm afraid...
