Haven't posted in ages, as been busy but been thinking about this for a bit.

I dunno if anyone is into the ZX Spectrum but there's a new issue of Crash magazine coming out that was on kickstarter and I did a few reviews for it of games that have been made recently for the Speccy. There were some amazing games that were a lot of fun and really impressive, and it just shows you don't need HD graphics for a game to be good. I didn't grow up with the Speccy either so it wasn't nostalgic for me, but some games kept my attention for longer than some PS4/Xbox One titles do.

So over the past forty years, what games have really stuck with you? I have far too many favourites really, but the Dizzy (the egg) series, Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy and Resident Evil are probably highest on my list. Be interesting to hear from you guys!

Good to see you posting mate

Fookin love my Speccy. It's getting pulled out its box tomorrow for a bit of vintage fun.

Spectrum games -
Jet Pac
Horace and the spiders
Hungry Horace
Horace goes skiing
Saboteur
Way of the exploding fist
Manic Miner
3d death race - pretending it was speederbikes
3d Tank zone
Elite
Gremlins adventure game

Modern PC -

SW mysteries of the sith - first "modern" game demo I played on a PC. Played it until 04:00 and basically seized up in front of the monitor. Could not believe how amazing the graphics and sound were (compared to manic miner)
Phantom Menace - played it in PC world and immediately upgraded my PC to play it.
Unreal Tournament
Far Cry - best PC game ever!

Great topic

Championship manager 97/98
Goldeneye
Super Mario World 64

If you added up all the hours I spent playing these games from the age of 17 to 19 it's probably about a year. :?

My favourite arcade games back in the day were Chase HQ and Double Dragon.
The Ninja Turtles machine was good because it was huge and could have a 4-player.

Renegade on the Spectrum was a great game.

Mario Kart.
Destruction Derby.
Hitman.
Madden's NFL games.

These are the best SW games imo as they mean the most to me from childhood, recently bought these on Ebay for the princely sum of two quid each

Jumpin Jack (Spectrum)

ZX games that I played over and over:
Manice Miner
Jet Pac

R Type
Ghost n Goblins
All the free Demos on the front of Crash mag

No has mentioned Jet Set Willy, is it just me, but this was so infuriating!

I sure that there are lots more to add, but those come to mind straight away.

Recently revamped my old 128k +2b with ROM upgrades and a divmmc unit. Can now load games from SD rather than a half hour cassette load.

One game that really was the nutts back in the day was Myth. Superb gameplay and graphics on that one so worth a play if you can.

Also played the Dizzy games, R Type, Crazy Cars 2 pretty much to death.

Also found a few of my old cassettes in the loft.

Thank you buddy! Nice to be back, just been so busy.

I loved Saboteur! Never finished it but I had fun playing it. I think it must have been an Amstrad port though, the one I had.
And Phantom Menace PC game was awesome. I had so much fun killing the whole of Mos Espa as Qui Gon! I remember there were slave kids and they would say "who you gonna murder next mister?" Folllowed by "Aaaarrgh" as you swung your saber at them. Was the only game I can recall of recent years where you can actually murder children!

I actually reviewed Myth fairly recently on my site albeit the Amstrad version:

https://theforgottenstarship.wordpress.com/2017/04/07/retrocomputing-10-memorable-amstrad-cpc-games-and-a-qa-with-andrew-oliver-of-the-oliver-twins/

I was bloody awful at it but I loved the aesthetics of it, with the skeletons that came out of the ground with a sword and shield like the ones in Jason and the Argonauts.

That sounds an awesome solution to waiting times mate. But nowadays I don't mind waiting too much for a game to load. When I was a kid I hated it as it seemed to take hours. Maybe it's cos I can always find something to do now whilst its loading but I loaded some games on a Speccy I bought recently and I was surprised how quick it was, and how unlike my cousins C64 or my Amstrad as a kid it was! But nowadays I'm used to having to install games on the Xbox before I can play 'em and some take well over an hour, so I don't begrudge a bit of time for an old computer to load a cassette!

Haven't done much gaming since meeting the wife and having a daughter but here's a few of my favourites I've whiled away a fair amount of time on:

Rocket Raid
Chuckie Egg
Citadel
Repton
Golden Axe
Streetfighter
Xenon 2 Megablast
Championship Manager
Grand Theft Auto Vice City
SSX Tricky

I for some reason never got into video games. I would have loved to have owned a video console or computer as a kid but I never had one.
My first console was one i bought for myself, the Gamecube, obviously for the Star Wars games. However my favourite games were James Bonds Nightfire (so much multiplayer fun with my mates) but chillingly the creepiest and best was Eternal Darkness. Seriously you must check out this game, it was awesome.
It had something exclusive which i don't think has been done before or since 'Sanity mode', being whenever the character saw a monster/zombie/mummy etc their sanity would take a knock. They could rebuild their sanity by executing these fiends in a certain fashion, however if left unchecked their sanity would start to deplete. BUT, it wasn't their sanity, it was yours as the player!!! It was awesome, you'd find a fly was attracted to the TV, but it wasn't a fly, it was the game, however it bloody looked like a real fly. You'd see that the TV would mute (mute would appear on the screen), then stop, you'd see that when you tried to quickly save a game you saw that you had actually just deleted everything, and then it was all ok. You'd enter a room and everything would be wrong, or upside down, the floor wouldn't be completely flat, it would be at an odd angle, or simply messed up. Sanity mode had about 20 mess with your head things, and it was brilliant. I'd be in the middle of battling and then i'd realise that i was sat on the remote control and the volume was being turned down accidentally. No, not sat on the remote, it's sanity mode messing with me. A very clever element to a game.
If they ported this onto the X=Box One i'd buy it. But then, much like the new Resident Evil games, i'd buy them and then realise that i'm too dam busy to play them. I've just googled Eternal Darkness. There was a lot of chat and even crowd funding to get Eternal Darkness 2, but as yet, it's not happening.
