Hi gents

Don't know if this has ever been touched on before or not?

Is collecting vintage toys on a par with comic collecting?

I personally don't think so,but lots of my mates rip the **** out of me for collecting old toys etc...

Would love to hear your thoughts on this,is there anyone on here who collects both?

Would that make them "super geek" or what?

Cheers stef

I found that people take this piss out of geeks.......

and then geeks showed them how to download free music.......

now geeks are the cornor stone of society.

What about football fans? Aren't they exactly the same?

ha ha - I don't consider myself a geek but I am sure if a few of my friends overheard conversations about loose variants or cardbacks A, B or C then they would rip this piss

Anyway, with the likes of Peep Show, IT Crowd and Big Bang Theory, being a geek is pretty cool at the moment

What if you collected comics and vintage Star Wars? Ahem.... I once collected comics but now I'm cool and collect toys instead  , It's a wonder I got out of my bedroom long enough to meet a chick and get married

I going to stand up and say Yes I'm geeky and proud, I collect both vintage Star wars and comics as well as other things and I love them all.
I collect for myself not for anyone else or that its the in thing to collect.

Here here! Say it loud, say it proud!

 I tell you being geeky makes life more interesting. I'ts about being passionate about something. Some folk are passionate about nothing! I'm glad I'm geeky!!

I know guys who know everything about cars - yet they are "cool" ??
It's an extension to their knobs!! (they are insecure)
We are not trying to porve anything

Good post

Couldnt have put it better myself :)

While it isn't the most glamorous hobby collecting toys has helped me meet some of the nicest people on this planet, I wouldn't change a thing about collecting toys as a hobby as I would rather have a chat with any of you lot or the friends I know from Star Wars collecting than all the people I know in real life (or that I used to know 10 years ago who then send me facebook add request yet never actually speak to me afterwards) that just booze + talk about footy all the time.

It always amazes me that you get people from all walks of life collecting Star Wars yet almost all of them are as down to earth as the next one. There are some bad apples at times but I would say Star Wars fans (probably in general not just Vintage) are generally just cool people through and through and that can't always be said about people you meet day to day.

If your "friends" laugh at your hobby or your collecting then either they aren't much of a friend or they don't have a hobby of their own and don't really know how to accept yours.

Hey Stef my mates take the piss out of me as does my step daughter :D but I just tell my mates too piss off and tbh mate when I tell them what they are worth they then seem be very interested :D

Nothing wrong with being a geek.
But I reckon vintage collecting is the least geeky type of collecting. I think most people get into it, at first at least, for nostalgia reasons. Trying to recapture the magic of your childhood isn't geeky at all.
The collecting urge might take over later but that's just human nature - the urge to have more **** than everyone else.

Modern collecting on the other hand - now that's geeky!

Bill Gates is a geek and he could buy and sell anyone on this earth a hundred times over. It is a hobby and a passion. Anyone who would look down upon it or think it is stupid.........I always ask them what they spend their time and money on? Sports...gambling....Cheap hookers...sports cards.........it's all what you like and in the end we all still pissed our money away on something that made us happy.

Geek Chic my friends Geek Chic...

Our 15 year old wears fake glasses to enhance her Geek Chic then calls me and Jr geeks for collecting Star Wars , don't know how long it will last but its cool to be geeky atm.

I keep reminding her geeks get better jobs than dudes

Great question,
I was out for a pint a while back with the brother in law who was asking about my Star Wars collecting.....I started to go on about the recent purchases I had made, ESB Han, tsukuda ERG....etc....I was explaining the various cardbacks 12, 20 and so on, and then it struck me just how passionate I was talking about my collecting and how much I have learned in one short year on a this brilliant forum :D

Now I don't consider myself a geek, but I collect for what makes me happy, SW is an all time classic film and most people deep down, well blokes anyway, have to admit they like it or at least did growing up......

in fairness the brother in law was genuinely interested, I think, it was just the two of us so he didn't really have anyone else to talk too..... but he did keep interrupting me when I kept saying, "I was talking to one of the lads...." or 'one of the lads said'...... And he asked "when you say 'one of the lads' is that some geek off that website?".........

Similarly to what Scott said, he was impressed when I told him the value of some of the figures etc.....

People i work with know that i like Star Wars. Same with mates - they know i go to the odd convention now and then, but i'm not sure they know the extent of my collecting. I don't go on about it because in all honesty i don't think they would get it. That's ok. It's for me and for my enjoyment, and also so i can share with the likes of yourselves.

It's like if you've ever been backpacking. You come home having been to all these strange and exotic places and it's hard to share with the average person you meet because they haven't experienced the same thing. Some may have a light interest and ask a few questions but they don't feel as passionate as you do.

The internet has made a huge difference. If you collected in the 90's it was a relatively solitary interest, now though we have great forums and communities.

As for whether we are geeks. Yes. No question. Embrace it :D

I don't think it's geeky more quirky. Life goes on like anyone else's. now I have kids and I can't get out as much I love this hobby. I am sure in a few years it will be something else. My mates know I love star wars and always have. Makes me easy to buy presents for. Never get socks.

I class this as my obsessive impulsive disorder coz I'm a mess when it comes to anything remotely normal, what is therefor normal? Someone who watches soap operas all night and gets hung up over who is voted off icecelebrityfactor? Now to me, that's the geek.

Rant, and point finished.

Personally I just think it's great to have knowledge and be passionate about a subject that's a bit different.

I can't stand football and don't understand people who do. To me it's just white noise. Somehow people who are football fans and are really fanatical about it don't seem to be classed as geeks or 'quirky'. Whatever others may class the likes of the people on this forum as i'm happy with it because we are involved in something positive, and that's what's really cool! :p

People are passionate about different things ie football, cars, trains, fashion, gardening, etc.

Collecting Vintage Star Wars is no more geeky than any other passion and if society think is it is - I don't care! Star Wars was my childhood and has many many happy memories for me - the films, the toys, Christmas, Birthdays, Stickers, books etc.

Until I joined this forum I honestly thought it was just me that felt this way, but reading the comments on here from everyone else all of you are just as passionate (and some a lot more than me - with wealth of knowledge) about this fantastic hobby.

No one at my work knows I collect Star Wars, conversations never come up. Friends and family do know, some totally disinterested - fine by me, but don't expect me to be enthralled with Cricket, the history or World War 2 or different species of garden roses!!!

Most people who see my stuff think it's awesome ...at least that's what they say to my face
