HI all,

Long time no see! I've been away from collecting for a year or so, but once the nights start drawing in, and there's a whiff of snow in the air, I seem to get excited about it again... weird.

Anyway, one of the things I've been getting into over the last 12 months is 40K. Like SW, it's one of those nostalgia things for me, I loved it when I was at Primary school in the late 80s and then like most people I forgot all about it when I hit puberty. But my folks were clearing out their loft the other year and they found my old copy of Space Crusade (the 40K version of Heroquest). Well of course we had a game for old time's sake and it was really fun! It got me thinking about it again so I went on ebay and started looking for the old issues of White Dwarf that I used to have. The covers were so iconic in those days that I clearly remembered which ones I had. I bought a few and had a nostaliga-gasm, which of course lead me down the dark path of thinking, hmm, I wonder what it's like now?

When I was little I was most interested in painting the models, I liked to dream about winning the Golden Deamon painting competition and getting that Slayer Sword for best painter! As a fully grown adult I now have enough money to buy a few models and paints and have a go and it's been really good fun (if a lot harder than I thought)!

Anyway, long story short I've been sucked in enough to start thinking about putting together an army and I was wondering if anyone else on here plays?

I used to play a bit but stopped about 95-96 ish. Mainly due to discovering alcohol lol.
My brother in law plays and I do chat to him about it from time to time, but not sure I'd have the patience to get back into it. I know they have changed the rules about 5 times since I played.

I think Gary (SithSmith) used to play as well. I remember chatting to him about it on here a long long time ago.

Actually, where is Gary? I haven't seen him on for a while.

This pretty much sums me up as well although it would have been more like 97/98.
savory100 has mentioned previously that he used to play 40K or Warhammer I think

I do pop in the local hobby shops from time to time but I haven't bought anything yet - prices seem to have gone a bit mental, probably more so for me as I used to have friends that worked for GW so they got 50% in store and could do lead weight orders, i.e hand over £30-£40 and get a 3/4000 point army instantly

Wow... 3000 - 4000 points would cost you about a grand nowadays!
Yeah it is expensive. But to be fair in the last few months GW seemed to have turned a bit of a corner in terms of listening to the punters. They've brought out some really good stuff, some good value box sets and are starting to sell stuff in formations, so you can get a decent army £150-200. Depending on what you want to play of course. I just bought the Kill Team box set which gets you a SM tactical squad, the equivalent Tau squad and the full 40K rulebook for £40. Considering the rule book on it's own retails for £50, that's not bad.

Rather unsurprisingly we all had massive armies, a couple of the lads built their own Baneblade using the instructions GW provided and near enough completed a Marine chapter, yes chapter, not just company. We were all crazy for Bloodbowl as well, not sure that even exists anymore?

They just brought blood bowl back last month with updated rules, looks quite good. The box set look really well thought out too, has a lot of cool stuff

I did/do have an interest, well remembered, but not really as a long term player. I used to spend many hours painting the figures. My brother had Heroquest and the space marine games, which we did play, but it really was more about the painting for me.
In more recent years my son and I bought some figures and I taught him the various painting techniques, I also used the paints for my customs as they apply so well.

I used to love reading the stories in the codex books, some of them were brilliant.

Sweet, birthday and Christmas coming up so might drop a few hints :D

Use to play this.

Spent more time painting and reading White Dwarf.

Blood Bowel 2nd Edition was a favourite with the chainsaw rules.

Talisman 2nd Edition

Heroquest.

This was about 1988-1994.

Good times.

Not 40k but wondered if any of you knew if these were from role playing? I've vague memories of Judge Dredd figures in similar packs

I don't remember them from the olden days, but there's a SW tabletop game called X-Wing which is really popular at the moment.

They wouldn't be West End games unless they made unbranded ones for multipacks or mail aways or possible even the staff store?
I don't remember seeing them specifically but I do remember seeing other fantasy figures in nondescript packaging but can't think what they were? RPG figures of some sort is the best I can do. They look great though

Looks good, as does the first team released and at £20 the team isn't that much more than a team in the late 90s would've been.
£72 for the paint set for a team is a complete piss take though

I'm still around, sort of..

Yes I used to play. I had a space marine company...Dark Angel...plus several Terminator and bike/landspeeder squads, not to mention various tanks.

Also had a large Ork and a large Imperial Guard army and was building a Dark Elder army.

Not play since around 98. Sold most of the unpainted stuff. Just kept the Space marine and Ork stuff Painted stuff.

Used to love Hero Quest too, though had the original version (probably the simpler one) and there was also another medieval battle game they did that you placed on a large mat. Can't remember what that was called.

Still love the Warhammer 40k universe and was always hoping they bring out a film or something based within it.

Just play Dawn of war now, which is one of my favourite PC games 8)
