I did the typical British thing of only looking for one when it was already over 30 degrees, and now they're sold out everywhere. Anyone got any tips on where to find one?!

Lidl. But, you'll be lucky to find one now. They had queues before opening on Wednesday

My advice would be to buy in winter when no one's buying.
I know it doesn't help with right now, but it gives you plenty of time to plan what system you want/need.
As for now, feet in a bowl of cold water is my best advice.

Not that I can help find any, but is it to keep you cool, or the collection?

We had a permanent one fitted on our wall a few years ago after some sweltering summers. It cost a few thousand but was well worth the money. Even here in Finland wer're experiencing more temperatures close to +30c in the summer and more humidity than there used to be. Just having it available when needed has been a life-saver.

The problem we've got is the kids bedrooms are in an attic conversion, and last week it was mid 30s up there overnight, so they had to sleep downstairs. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but one of my kids is at the severe end of autistic and any minor change to the daily routine causes chaos. So we need one up in their bedrooms to make them habitable. Our house is a listed building, so we can't have "proper" air con with massive external units unfortunately. It's probably not great for the collection either but people are the main priority :D

Can't help on air con - we are on the lookout too.
But we do have one of these which is pretty decent - the misting helps cool you down.

Our daughter is autistic and can be extremely sensitive to how things feel and sleeps fine with this blowing towards her on the lowest setting (cos its quieter).
It works either plugged in or lasts a good few hours on battery too.

It was 27c when I came home from work today so was really nice to have the AC available to cool down.

Yes, unfortunatley many homes aren't able to have a permanent AC fitted. But if you can then I would recommend it, even though it's not needed for most of the year.
