if you were looking for a trades man in paper would you go for the one with their ad in a fancy box ,thinking they must be good as they have cash for a better ad or on with just a few lines

To be honest I'd probably go by word of mouth as much as anything. I'd also get a few quotes and go for whoever was the most reasonable.
I reckon as long as your ad doesn't look like it was knocked up on the back of a fag packet you'll be fine.

yeah but if you had say 14 ads in front of you 7 good ones and 7 where it says plaster all jobs considered call joe blogs 12345678

If there was no word of mouth involved, you'd have no idea who was good etc, so I reckon you'd be more likely to be drawn to the more eye catching ad first.

i go by word of mouth but i would go for the local man with 2 shitty lines i think they would give a better result than a large company that can afford adverts.

tried it got a few calls .word is spreading but slow

I do promotion work for a night club and at first all they gave me was shitty flyers knocked up on their computer on normal a4 paper, when i convinced them to pay a bit extra and get some proffessional glossy flyers trade went up by two thirds. At the end of the day if you want to attract attention you need something that sets you apart, people are stupid in all honesty  and something bright and flashy(peacock effect), gets their attention every time.

"Sex sells" as well mate!

Although I'm not sure a topless photo of you will have the same effect!

to be honest money spent in one area on the idea that in one week/month some people looking for you services will pisk you out of the many that will also be listed is a risk,, your putting all your eggs in one basket,,and for such a short period too..

if i was doing it then id spend the money on some good buisness cards and put them up in supermarkets on the billboards as most wifes dont like there homes being recked by there ****wit husbands that think they can save a couple of quid by doing a half arsed job of it themselfs.... at the end of the day its the wifes nest the blokes just want to be left alone to scratch there bollocks and watch t.v on there time off.....and not do extra work...... see where iam going with this ......

and if you go to a few different places newsagents windows etc.. as they advertise your cards in the window for free or you might have to pay a quid for a month..anyway ive learnt the hard way as i spent about 600 quid on advertising in the first year of trading(restaurant)..ive now been open 4 nearly 5 years and since the first years spend i thought **** it and ive now not done any adverts at all.....word of mouth is the best way you just need to spead the word as cheaply as possible.... anyway hope this helps !!

Everyone knows all tradesmen are conmen so who cares?!!!

Personally I always ask my Dad to get one of his mates to do the work for me but if I have to chose someone out of the paper I will always go for one with a decent advert as they have taken the time to atract new customers so I always assume they at least know what they are doing !!

the flashy ones are not always the best to use had blocked drain called out 3 different companies dyno rod, drains for you etc and they were **** cost a fortune and didnt fix the job properly but a friend of a friend knew someone and they came round sorted it for almost a third of the cost. :D

i had the same experiance with my car a few months ago,, i took it to the dealer for a service and they said i needed 4 new tyres & brake pads they quoted me Ã'£395 + vat (wankers)

i took the car away and as i was driving home i passed kwikfit so i popped into there for a second opinion,, and guess what they said i only needed 2 new tyres and a set of brake pads, they quoted me Ã'£195 + vat

fuming i was on my way home from there and i passed a cheap looking family type run place which was a run of the mill garage,, he put my car on the ramp and had a look he said the tyres are fine but 2 may need replacing in a month or two ! and the brake pads just needed taking off and cleaning ...so he dismantled the brake pads and charged me Ã'£25 ...

****in robbing bastards !

unfortunately, everyone has a bad story to tell about tradesmen or mechanics!

I always worry about taking my car in!

Word of mouth is definitely the only way to fully trust someone unless you know them
