A really good Star Wars video game

I'm not a massive gamer but I do love a good video game and I've been playing them since the early 80's. I've played all the good games on most of the consoles right through to my current Xbox 360. Hearing the video game discussion on the podcast was great and seeing Edds Star Wars video game collection bought back a few memories.

Now there has been some decent Star Wars games and I've been told about some PC ones that are meant to be good that I haven't played. We used to play ROTJ in the arcade in the 80's, one of my favourites. I still feel there hasn't been a really really good Star Wars game ever on a console and it bugs the **** out of me! Battlefront was pretty good but theres things I didn't like about it. Force unleashed was ok but it wasn't a true first person and there was too many moves, too complicated and it does that weird zoomy out thing.

I don't understand why with all their resources Lucasfilm can't produce or commision a kick arse first person shooter. They need to make a simple one with top notch gameplay, so it plays like Halo or Call of Duty but in the Star Wars universe. Imagine running round the Death Star as Han Solo or Chewy. Lightsaber battles as Luke or Obi-Wan. It could be so good and the levels and maps could be amazing. Why the **** don't they do it? I'm gagging for it. Ok rant over. Anyone else feel the same?

Yes. The closest we got was Dark Forces in my opinion which is the greatest SW game ever. A simple shooter Stormies type of game with a great story.
I think Jedi Knight was a little weaker and I wasnt a fan of the light sabre. However, the Mysteries of the Sith expansion pack is arguably the best add-on of all time. Loved it! They then got too complex for me, with far too many force powers and moves which killed the fun.

Totally agree

I gave up gaming simply because you had to work out strategies, link up to things and put up with complex crap

Like you say simple first person shooter, maybe I'm like this cos I'm an old git, but don't have the time, so just want to switch on, kick ass then switch off

KOTOR is my top SW game, never liked turnbased fighting,
but the story was immense, got really sucked into it, played 3days straight,
and still covered just a fraction of the game.
Wish they would make something similar, but ditch the turnbased
fighting mechanics...

Knights of the old republic? Took a minute to work that one out! What platform/console? Haven't played it, that's partly why I started the thread too, to hear about games.

When you say turnbased do you mean like Force Unleashed where the camera zooms out and your character can be facing you? I can't stand that, I want to see only my weapon in front of me and when I look, I turn, Doom style. Proper first person, see through the eyes :D

The best one I played was either Republic Commando for the OG Xbox or Shadows of the Empire for the N64.

On pc mate, turnbased as in you have to wait on the opponent to make a move then you can.(or the other way around)

You won't be dissapointed if you try it, takes a couple of hours to get into it, but after that, it's pretty much amazing.
A real SW feel aswell, even if it's set 10 000 years before the OT.

Oh right yeah got it, you have to take turns. What like playing Warhammer? Not sure I'd like that, like first person shooters. I'd give it a go though.

Don't know about warhammer, like standard pc rpgs

There have been some great Star wars games in the past, the Vector Style arcade game, I enjoyed Return of the Jedi on the Atari ST, Super Star wars on SNES, Rogue Squadron on the N64 and Battlefront on the PS2.

Unfortunately I have not ever had a gaming PC set up so I haved missed out on some great titles on the PC. Some of the Call of Duty Star Wars mods look good too.

If you want a simple first person shooter though Battlefront provides this, especially the Jedi-free first version. If that isn't enough for you Battlefront 3 is on its way for PS4 and Xbox One, hopefully this will quench our thirst. Play it as a first person shooter or jump in a vehicle and kick arse for any side seen in the films...

I can't wait for this and won't be going next gen until it arrives...

This is available on IOS now and works ok. I have it on my iPhone and iPad. I think it cost about £7

If you like RPGs its well worth a try.

I've got Battlefront on the PS2 and I do like it. It's got issues though, you get killed and re-spawned and all that and it gets annoying after a while. Also the gameplay's not great, the aiming/crosshairs and look speed etc are a bit rough and it auto-aims which I don't like. Especially if you compare it to other games of the time like Medal of Honour or SOCOM which play much better. I want something along the same lines as Battlefront with great levels on all the different planets and environments but playing as just one person and with the gameplay of Halo Reach/Halo 4. I would like to check out new games but I don't have an Xbox One or PS4 and I'm not planning on getting either just yet (I'm generally at least one console behind the latest one ). I suppose if they do bring out a good Star Wars game I'll have to treat myself.

Only SW game worth playing is Battlefront so easy and so addictive. I never read manuals and never upgraded from my PS2 and this game (1&2) still amaze me. I cannot recommend them enough

for the pc a bit dated but this is awesome, great gameplay

My fave Star Wars PC game was Jedi Outcast. Online multiplayer was basically a free roam but players had understandings of waiting their turn and being respectful of each other in game before bowing and beginning a sabre battle. Sometimes a noob would enter the server and steam into everyone and everything but he would soon get booted out and the abuse they would get on the headset was very amusing.
I have just got Rebel Strike Rogue Squadron III for my gamecube but have yet to give it a blast altho' i've heard good things about it.
From what i can remember, Rebel Assault II on PS1 was decent aswell. I need to dig it out and crank up the large grey showbox thingy

My faves:

Rouge Squadron II on the Gamecube is the best game in terms of flight. I still play it now.
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast for 1st/3rd person shooter.
Lego Star Wars II (original trilogy) is brilliant too.

Same situation for me too. Xbox1 can wait till this game gets released.
