Wow I had no idea early proofs were commanding so much-reading Oil's post  Based on that perhaps 30K doesn't seem as outlandish as originally thought-which is scary

I play guitar and have seen similar things (i.e. crazy prices) happening in fairly recent years with vintage instruments. Ones from the 50s - especially Gibsons and Fenders - can go for easily over £100,000 these days. What happened is people wanted to reclaim their youth and buy the guitar their heroes owned (be it Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton etc) and then those people started to get rich and have disposable income to burn. Prices then skyrocketed far out of the reach of the "ordinary" player.

What is sad is that many are so expensive they are viewed as investments more than musical instruments. Many now sit in bank vaults never to be played. It is possible SW collecting could go the same way - kids of the late 70s and early 80s are now in their 40s/50s and earning good money and wanting to reclaim their childhood. There will be a small segment who are mega-rich and can pay almost anything and squeeze regular collectors completely out of the game. But with what happened to guitars, the sad thing is it could mean the SW items become seen as investments and end up hidden away to ensure they maintain their value and not get stolen/damaged etc.

Hopefully, as there are so many SW items to collect (unlike 50s guitars) there will always be a place for people to build a nice collection without having to take out second mortgages :D
