Seriously, take an onion, chop in two and place in a sealed box with the figure. It works on fridges so it's got to work with figures :) Onions are, believe it or not, brilliant odour absorbers rather than emitters. And worst case scenario you can dump the figures in the gravy for the above Yorkshire puddings.

Great comments and tipps, thanks guys!

I had them for hours in a soap wash - didn't help.
I had them overnight in the freezer (yes, freezing is antibacterial) - did help somewhat!
So I'll leave them for a couple of nights more in there...

Afterwards will give them the slight furniture polish rub they deserve (thanks SublevelStudios).

If that wont work, I'll start smoking!
