That really brings back memories of the E.T cereal packets. That Ready Brek glow!
I have very fond memories of the cut out models that used to be printed on the back of cereal packets. My brother Paul and I made a cut out classic car each when we were very young. I freaked him out at my 40th birthday party when I produced the very same models for a display of our old toys. He had no idea that I had kept them in mint condition for all of those years! I recall also that some cereal packets included colour cut outs of cartoon characters such as Boss Cat on the back and if you folded open the empty packet, there was scenery printed in black and white covering the entire inside.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the high point for me, with the cut out models of the Enterprise and Klingon Cruiser (as memory serves?) as well as the high quality cards included inside the packets. Some of the alien characters on the cards never made it into the film though which was very disappointing to my young self. I thought that the cut out space cars designed for Superman: The Movie were rubbish but I still made one and it's sorry self is still knocking around somewhere in a long forgotten box.
My favourite cereal offer by far was the Weetabix tokens for Britains Deetail metal based soldiers. I remember in the TV advert that the camera was placed at table top level, making the soldiers appear life sized as smoke swirled around and sounds of battle blared out. The voice over stated proudly that "Each one is armed to the teeth." I received in the post an Arab brandishing a pair of flintlock pistols and a Waterloo British army standard bearer, both which of course I still have and are the most precious of all my Britains Deetail soldiers.
Craig.
