Woolyniner said:Interesting stuff, back in 1993 where people buying from you as collectors only, or would you still get people buying them as originally intended? What I mean by that is did you have people buying items off you to open from the packaging and playing/displaying like it was 1983 still?
I'm just wondering when the second hand star wars market went from toys to be opened to toys to be collected and preserved.
This is a really good point and triggered a memory from the time.
A chap who lived locally would sometimes phone and ask if he could visit my home and see what the latest stuff I had in stock.
Guy was in his 40's and he had 2 boys, one of 6 and one of 8. He was buying stuff for them to play with, and not junk bits, I'm talking BOXED Shuttle Tyderiums, Land of the Jawas etc... some carded figures that he said they would open and play with. Again, this was around 93-94.
We were always left gobsmacked when he left after spending £300 of all this stuff just to let his lads play with them - and they certainly didn't look like they would go easy on them either
I think at this point there were still people who would buy them as toys - not collectables. In fact when I used to visit private sellers who had liberated their stuff from the loft I would tell them I was buying them for my nephew who wanted the toys to play with as you could no longer get them in shops - that way you had a better chance of getting a good deal.
On several occasions I would visit someones house after placing a wanted ad in the local paper and they would have all their stuff laid out in the front room - Palitoy Death Stars, 12" figures, heaps and heaps of boxed vehicles, loose and carded figures. Buying lots like this for £50 or £60 a time and then sitting on the bus back home with 4 bin liners full of stuff
Yep, collecting and dealing in the early days was fun!
