So not to derail the podcast thread any further here's my take on things:

We planned to do a roundtable on the topic of facebook and ask questions what I've seen and read many times on forums. All 5 of us on the podcast have dipped our toes into fb with differing levels of engagement but none of us think/thought that fb would/will replace the forums. Then spontaneously a post on fb necessitated the speeding up of the interview and it happened over 3 days. The guys who came on the show were extremely eager and all, not Matt, were regular forum users. Ross stepped in at short notice to cover.
We knew exactly the reaction we'd get. Everything you guys have put in the other thread some or all of us agree. We will have a follow up soon with guys from forums presenting their take on fb. And I'm sure we'll get issues from that too. And that's cool - debate is healthy. It is interesting to note though that a few extra guys have dipped their toes into fb since the interview which is interesting and it'd be cool to hear about their experience in a month or so time.

Now this bit is me personally, not the other 4 dimwits. I think you get out of fb exactly what you put into it and let come out. The second bit is easier to explain. I was a member of loads of groups. Loads! My facebook feed was full of SW. It was when I started to see the same post in 5, 6, 7 groups that I started to think. I learnt a bit about fb controls and tools and then I began to restrict notifications. This meant that I missed some posts. Well, if I wasn't on fb I'd miss them anyway so nothing lost there. But it meant that it became manageable. So, which groups to follow?

It makes sense to join a UK selling group - so I'm in Yavin 4 and Echo Base. And that would be a sufficient starting place. Take off notifications if you don't want bombarded with posts and you just want to skim at the end of the day or week. Then there's the SW 12/21, ESB, ROTJ and POTF groups. Now these groups are interesting. The first one is where the majority of the action is. Although it's primarily SW if anything needs posted of interest (new topics to debate) it goes here. So I follow this one. The other three (I'm not sure if I'm in the POTF group) I may browse from time to time. These groups are where you'll find many swfuk, RS, TIG and non-forum guys. Yes it may look unwieldy at first (it did to me) but once I joined in I figured out how to use it. I don't search often unless I'm researching. I scroll past posts that don't interest me. simple.
Then where do you go? Well, this is where it is down to you. Jason's group is huge. 15,000 members. I can't manage that group - sorry Jason, but I do know that many like it so try it. You've got groups for different areas of interest (Joe's trilogo, JoeY bootleg, Todd's International, Jenni variants, Boba Fett focus, Johnpaul cardbacks, etc....) you get the idea. But don't join them all. Keep out of the ones you're not interested in. Don't care for bootlegs? Don't join. You can also change your settings so people can't add you to groups which is a pain at times. By using the tools and controls you can filter out the noise and be left with what you can manage. I can manage what I have now and very little more.

There has been a lot of criticism of features and tools. I agree with many! FB may not be here forever. Although searching is simple you need to know what to search for and in which group. It's a pain at times. It'll not replace the forums as we know it. And there in lies the issue. FB evolves. It changes. It's a business and needs to stay relevant. An example, FB are taking business from ebay. Is that going to continue? Yes! Will FB look at this and start thinking, can we make money from this? Damn right they will. In the groups there are already FS options. It won't be long. FB will evolve and keep changing. It's interesting reading posts from 2002 decrying the need for forums when there was nothing wrong with RASSCV and other mailing lists! I kid you not. They're easy to find on RS.

And now the biggest benefit of FB for me. It's not the information, I use swca, trilogo.info, forums for that although good information does come up on FB. It's not for the FS posts, although it's easier to post images and there's a hell of a lot more stuff FS. It's not to see the limelights, again there's a lot of that and many examples of cool stuff I've never seen before. It's the personal interaction with the community. I've doubled, tripled my friendship group. A lot of guys from RS, to whom I was just a username on a forum typing BS; a lot of guys on here with whom I've not interacted with as much due to different interests; and a lot of guys who do not like forums. Guys like us, well not weasel. Guys who enjoy the hobby and want to share their passion in a different manner. Guys who I'm looking forward to meet up with in London next year and talking about my hobby. the personal touch that fb gives is not equaled by forums. FB messenger (a bit like whatsapp for those who don't know) is a major selling point. And that's what I mainly enjoy.

So moving forward in this hobby I will 100% be participating in forums. They're my home. But I will certainly be spending a lot of time on FB. I expect more in-depth discussions to continue on fb. Do I worry about archiving? Certainly do. But I think FB will be here for a long time and that when it looks as though it's ready to die (like RASSCV) then the archivists from the swca or wherever will pull the most useful posts and store them once again.

Great points Richard and I have had made the same journey and decisions myself.
There are far too many groups but like you I hang around the uk groups and a few specialist groups. One thing I have done is separate my personal fb from my collecting fb.
I tend not to go on my personal fb any more but it's good to have the choice, don't want all my family and friends inundated by my boring geek posts!

Its a natural evolution. Technology and the way we interact online is changing. Its easier to use and more fast paced. I personally think the time of the traditional forum is ending, its had its time and served its purpose.

When I came back into collecting in April this year after a near 10 year hiatus (less about 6 months in 2010) I naturally rushed to RS to see whatvwas happening. A few of the old heads were still about but I could be excused for thinking something significant had changed while I was away. I ended up on a few FB pages and it feels like the place to be in 2015. This I'll admit (no offense intended) is feeling rather old fashioned.

Back in 2005 and earlier I used PC or laptop to browse and forums worked well. Now i only ever browse on my smartphone and forums are feeling increasingly clunky.

There is a shift like from the old newsgroup days to the forums and it is inevitable. Those that refuse to change may get left behind and miss out on a new era of online collecting.

I left all the facebook groups and have set my notifications so I receive minimal posts about Star Wars in my news feed. I just found that the groups were like going to TK Max. Sifting through piles of **** until you find anything remotely interesting. Plus guys dropping tonnes of money on stuff they know nothing about, showing it off, then asking questions before they put it back up for sale the following week. I've had no problems selling and buying the stuff I'm after on Rebelscum, SWFUK, eBay or directly off friends. I don't feel the need for facebook.

I prefer my facebook page and news feed to be about non Star Wars stuff and family and friends and don't want Star Wars taking over my life.

The one thing I will say is Facebook messenger is a great way to communicate and I'm friends with a lot of other collectors on facebook and it's often the chosen method for contacting them. You don't need to be on groups or let Star Wars take over your news feed to benefit from that!

And to harp on about the ability to search for stuff on Facebook groups. Well there is a basic search facility on all Facebook groups, but what group to search for it? Forums allow Google search which is a lot more powerful and you can use Boolean search terms to find stuff across specific or all forums.

I'm of the same train of thought as you Oli, I initially joined facebook after years of watching my wife use it. It undoubtedly has it's benefits as I use it to promote my work and have found some old friends through it but that where my interest in it ends and I refuse to let it dictate my life. I started out joining all the SW groups and even created one but it just got too much and I quit all of them bar the Toltoys group which I enjoy as it probably gets one to two posts a month.

For me personally I like the forums as they attract people through a common interest in this case Vintage toys, it's an escape or sorts that allowed me for the past 4 yrs to collect and chat to you blokes about just that. The main problem I have with facebook is that it has now transcended that common interest and allowed me to know **** about people I didn't previously know and in some cases didn't really want to know.

On here I don't have to hear about others politics, religion, sexual preferences ( Todd and Weas excepted ) or your views on everything from abortion to immunisation. It's not just hearing other views on these topics it's the downright abusive tones and pack mentality that follows, tactics that I strongly believe these people wouldn't consider saying or using in person to another ( real life ).

Social media is the next big form of mass brain washing as far as I'm concerned, I see so many people with their faces stuck in their bloody phones waiting with baited breath for the next alert that someone has responded, replied, liked, followed or shared something they've posted , tweeted, retweeted, uploaded, downloaded it's a captive audience ripe for the picking and what's best they are captive of their own free will. Subliminal advertising where the target does all the work for you, perfect.

If not following the latest trends deems me a dinosaur then so be it, if forums like this go by the way side as a result then that will be the end of my collecting ( as limited as it currently is ) and I'd be quite happy to resume living as I had quite happily for the first 20yrs of my life before digital based instant gratification came along.

Grumble, grumble, grumble I'm now officially and grumpy old fart. And loving it!

Great, thoughtful, posts guys.

I'm not touching FB with a ten foot pole, though I'm not currently collecting. I think it would be a great shame if the 'free' internet (of which this forum is a part) gets replaced by walled garden like FB.

I agree Rich, what you get out of Facebook is ultimately what you put in to it, which groups you join and who you choose to interact with. There are a million Vintage Star Wars groups as of right now but you really don't have to belong to them all.

Overall I would say that being involved with Facebook has had it's benefits but it definitely took me a while to wake up and realise that I didn't have to argue with every single misinformed idiot if I didn't want to, I didn't have to join and be involved in all of the different groups if I didn't want to and by limiting what I choose to see on my Facebook I think I've found a decent balance between Facebook for personal stuff and Facebook for SW stuff.

On a side note, of all the three big forums, SWF is definitely the busiest and has been for a good year or so now and that's promising and not only shows that people still enjoy having a forum to discuss stuff on but also that you can use both FB and forums simultaneously without having to choose one or the other.

I think this hits the nail on the head Ryan

Since I moved out here and started selling the Acrylic full time then I have almost tripled the number of 'friends' that I have - most of these guys have bought something from me and in 99% of cases they have been a pleasure to deal with

However, I now have a news feed containing some of the most diverse opinions going - especially from the Americans - when the Gay Marriage legalisation was announced then I had about 60% of 'friends' going all multi coloured and then another 10% quoting parts of the bible saying it is an abomination. This country has some huge race and gun issues and some of the posts I see from people have me astounded - one guy thought it was perfectly normal to open the door holding a loaded gun when someone rang his doorbell at 9pm (to tell him that the lights had been left on in his car!) - and then a load of other people agreed with him !

I have to say that Facebook has been amazing for me to build up the GW Acrylic brand over here and I wouldn't have been as successful without it - but there are a lot of down sides as well so I will continue to support the forum as long as Edd keeps it up

From a new guys perspective I see that forums and facebook compliment each other rather than it should be one or the other. I find the forum easier to navigate with its board index and threads, but facebook is more immediate, and I guess easier for those who use it via mobile phones. I prefer the forum on the grounds that if I wish to sell/buy here I would feel the item would not drop off the top page as quickly as facebook, and I really like the idea of the feedback thread which unless I'm blind I can't see on the facebook pages I've visited. Facebook though does allow for friends to be connected more easily, and that is one of major reasons for coming into being. I think they work well together.

Finally someone read it. Took me ages that and thought it would drop off the page soon.

I agree with most of the points above. There needs to be a balance and as each evolves we probably won't get it right for a long time yet.

Personally I don't think you need to choose between forums and facebook but equally I also don't feel you need to have both.
