Ways of Valuations, whats your thoughts?

Having just joined I have been reading some of the valuation advice and wonder where the train of thought comes from so felt this could be a good thing to discuss.
I have been buying vintage toys for a few years, TV related and a lot of Star Wars. I began my journey into the world of trying to value things on ebay but at most, much is over inflated and even when you list on ebay people tend to ask to sell cheaper than the listing price. I have seen a few references to Vectis but have learnt that you cant value anything using Vectis or any other Auction house soley on the Hammer price which is available for all to see, but what you dont see is the added buyers premium, shipping and VAT. My rule of thumb for a near accurate valuation is 3 x the Hammer price for most items, including Star Wars, the only exception being when it comes to loose figures. Loose figures are doing quite well when it comes to Hammer prices, I have seen some pretty high Hammer prices recently on loose ungraded figures, both with accesories and none. This is telling me that the market for loose figures has picked up since covid, boxed SW items have decreased as well as original carded figures, money is tight in the UK and that is reflected in current market prices.

I looked at that a few weeks back and thought, do i really need to pay for something, as good as it looks and felt that as I have my collection, and just wanting to pass some things on, it wasnt worth subscribing, its the UK Market that stalling. I also think age comes into it, as we get older the interest in vintage declines and when to sell is probably the hardest thing to guage.
