An oast house?

We have a WINNER!!!!!
Congratulations spoons!!!

It is indeed an oast house kiln- also known as a hop kiln!!!

Explanations for the clues:
It rotates in the wind
They are mainly found in Kent and Herefordshire
They are placed very high on a roof (long legs)

When i get back I will explain a little more clearly!

Hope you enjoyed the competition lads- I wish it was a scaled death star or indeed a toilet seat!

Send me your address dude and I will get your hard earned prize sent tomorrow!!!
Ed

Here is the one my dad made 30 years ago- and the one I am making is to replace it! It didn't get painted and the mast snapped and it took off!! It flew into the garden and smashed!!

Thank you to everyone that entered- I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did 8)

Blimey ed, that was a real shot in the dark. It was the county and mill things that gave me the idea. I knew they were mostly in Kent but never knew they turned or were on stilts

I was sure jeff had it

Will you get to taste the beer?

They will work (ie rotate in the wind) but they won't be drying hops- it's quite funny actually because the cowl sits over the top of a child's bedroom- and the birds have been perching in the cowl and shitting into the unfortunate child's room! The smell was atrocious! We will be sealing it off with Perspex so it should make it much warmer for the poor little sod :?

It is by far the most complicated structure I have ever made! So many complicated cuts to get it together. I will post a few more pictures of a finished example. It's quite an impressive structure when finished- 8'6" high and 3' diameter at the bottom. Dad swears when he was my age he would don the cowl like a turtle shell and walk up the ladder with the it on his back. He actually stropped when I ordered a crane to fit them!!!

Well done everybody- very enjoyable thread 8)

A bit late to the party- I initially thought it was an Irish spaceship :p Never heard of an oust house (an out house not an oust house  )

Irish spaceship  Cheeky, but in fairness, Given the current financial situation over here at the minute, a wooden spaceship is all we could probably afford.....
