vintage electrics restoration

aite fellas, ive bought a vintage handheld game of the bay (pocket simon 1980), it kinda works but sounds dodgy, at somepoint AA batterys were in it and have coroded and left residue on the contacts, im wondering if i cleaned the contacts would the unit work better? if so hows best to clean them?

I'd use a wood file with a fine grain and small head on it to polish up the contacts first off.
