I bet you never thought you'd see a topic about variants STARTED by me! :D

Some of you have probably seen, or contributed to, this thread from that other wee SW forum, but I thought I'd post it here to see what people think.

http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=3102385&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#3102385

Before Gustie and Snag get all defensive, I'm not slagging off variant collectors, just wanted to know what people thought.

I think they (some of the members of RS) over-analyse the sociology of different aspects of collecting and it leads to a lot of paranoia with some members

Its simple really, collect what you enjoy collecting, stuff whatever other people think and don't be afraid to share what you have :D

I honestly think the variant collectors among us have a great eye for detail, things I'd never spot and despite calling you mad on occassions  :p I do read all of the posts so I can learn more.

One has to decide where to draw the line, I've set out my variant collecting limits before I properly start (I've still got most of last 17 to get) I'm in no rush so I just keep an eye out and pick up the bargains when avaliable and get the expensive ones when the spare cash (or the wife) allows..

ie:
-All four R2's (including Droid factory one.
-Metal and matt effect IG-88.
-Original and Removeable limbs C3-PO.
-Cloth and (fake)vinyl Jawa.
-Yellow/orange/brown hair Lukes.
-Teeth/no teeth Lando.
-Big/small head Han.
-Blue/purple apron Ugnaught.
-Brown/green limb Bossk.

Just the more obvious visual ones really....

I agree totally. I do read the variant threads, all of them. Although I must admit at times I am completly lost

Same here but they are enjoyable all the same :D

No...come on not those guys. :p

i just like hunting them down

its good when u can grip a hollow cheeks tusken raider for cheap or a molded legs HH for instance. these versions can go for silly money loose without grading when they finally turn up- sometimes missed by bad listings etc...

ive been needing a romba, blue snag and yakface for a few months to finish the main run but found loads of variants in the meantime

its just nice to track them down and get hold of them

as for people who collect MOC im sure some of you will get the same figures on different cards/offers so you also could be labelled too :)

also with weapons... some folks dont care if the orange snake is with the right yoda or the black gun with stormtooper etc, but thats upto them, i think its nice to actually finish off the figure with the right gear. If you have gone to the lengths to find that rarer variant why not finish it with the correct type of weapon? i think it makes your collection more special than if you just chucked it up with any old gun.

i sometimes read about AFA stuff or carded but its mostly above my budget, but again i can learn what stuff is what for my line of collecting.

personally i dont give a toss what everyone collects, but its good to absorb info from different types of collectors to learn more for what you are interested in anyways. plus the oportunity to get some nice items from like minded collectors who aint gunna sell you junk like you sometimes get of shitbay.

my 2p's worth

I don't disagree with you Gustie. Whatever people want to collect - good luck to them.

As a matter of interest, is there a line you draw with regards to what is and what isn't a variant?
What about you other variant collectors?

Exactly my sentiments, even down to the right weapons :)

my lines are

PBP
Ledy
china coo
taiwan coo
HK
hong kong
made in hong kong
macau/o coo
glasslite
obvious paint variants
obvious mold variants

would like to find toptoys, toltoys, takara, tsukdu, meccanno, popy, but not gunna rush into that till i know more about them.

also i have a Clipper vader and would like to find out if there are any other unique variants to the clipper line... also i aint sure if the harbert line has any unique variants too... another channel for me to find out about...

my current favs are glasslite R2, holloe cheeks TR, ledy CCP, molded legs HH,

i know you can sub collect even the same COO's with different stamp molds but for me i will only get those if there is some other noticable difference to it.

i have finished a few runs of figures, but not any series yet....

the hunt continues.... :)
