Ok, I'm pretty good at building PCs etc but haven't tried PS4 yet.

So, my son has a 500GB HD and I've bought a 2TB to install. I've no problem installing it, it's the software I'm more bothered about as I know little of the PS OS.

My question is - what are the pitfalls.

I think I need to do the following:

1. backup the current PS to external HDD. (I have one which is encrypted and has data on. Is that a problem? I can remove the encryption but not keen on removing the data)
2. download a bootfile and put it on a pen drive. Will the PS4 autoboot from USB?
3. Copy the backup back over.

That it?

I'm also wanting to upgrade my ps4 but have no computer knowledge whatsoever. Is it possible to do?

The memory space is pitiful considering how much data you have to store per game. I've had to delete stuff and cannot install infinite warfare at all even though its sat there in my purchases. Only really wanted cod4 so it's not the end of the world

I'll have done it by the start of next week but it looks easy to do. I've downloaded the ps4 boot file on a pen drive, have a 500gb ext HDD ready for backup and a new 2TB hard drive ready to put in.

I did my Son's and I've never even opened a PC before so had no idea what I was doing. I looked it up online and YouTube and it took no time at all. Remarkably easy, bit embarrassed I was so terrified of doing it with hindsight

See. What you just said lost me already :?

I'll make an idiot's guide when I get it working.

Cheers Rich. I seriously need to sort this. I gather there's no loss of stored data when upgrading?

It's pretty poor the memory space. I only have a few games on there, admittedly one of them is GTA5, but there's not enough left for anything else. I've got Infinite Warfare bought but can't play it. Young lad wants Minecraft but I have no space. So annoying

Did it yesterday and it was easy. No lost data.

You need a 1GB pen drive and a 500 GB external hard drive to start. You also need a laptop hard drive to put in. I put in 2TB.

I can send you a pen drive and ext HD to start you. You can post back when done.

I think I have an external HD that's over 500GB. Need to check. Does it matter if there's other stored data on it? Must have a 1GB pen drive somewhere.

Daft question perhaps but where and what sort of PC drive did you get?

Not a PC drive. Must be a laptop drive. I got a 2 TB one. Seagate. I don't know if your hard drive needs to be blank. I'd guess not, I'd imagine the software from the PS4 creates a folder. This is the file that you need to put on your pen drive. Note - not the 280 MB one (that was my first mistake as that's for upgrading only) it's the 800 MB one.

The link you need is right at the bottom where it says download now in grey.

Create a folder called PS4 on your pen drive. In there create a folder called UPDATE. Then put the downloaded file into there.

I've seen those drives on ebay. Easy enough to get hold of.

Need your idiots guide Rich if you don't mind :)
