Uncirculated double telescoping figure set (AFA)

Is the owner of this a member here or just checking in?

On RS the "anonymous" owner stated that here the conversation was far less heated so either he was told, or is reading?

Quite curious to know who it is actually just because I am a nosey bastard
I provided the link to the UK and german board to him. Both forums handle this topic way cooler.

Would we know him if we knew his name ?

Is he a member of any forum or a completely private collector ?

Joe - No offence but why do you feel the need to know who the owner is. I personally think its a irrelevant who the owner is. I personally think its pathetic that people cant just appreciate this item for what it is which is rare and unique. I dont see the need for the melodrama or the pitchforks.

Just being nosey Grant :)
I didn't know that Lafos had given him the links of the forums where his item was being discussed so judging from his replies over on RS it seemed that perhaps he was reading from his own account.

I do think its a little strange that he is reading 3 forums discussing something he owns, clearly showing some interest to the debate and peoples reactions but wishes to stay anonymous, most of the big private collectors are exactly that "private" they don't converse on forums, they don't show off what they own and they don't create hype by asking a middle man to showcase their own items.

Because of the reasons above the owner is something of an enigma in how he chooses to collect!

Well I can respect that of course, just being nosey as I said :)

It was me who had great interest in showing this case. I expected discussions, but not the way it goes over at RS.

Everyone loves a bit of gossip ;)

So, you found out who owned this piece and requested that it be used on your site Lafos?

RS was always going to bring out some strong opinions, I don't think that is entirely bad, most of the guys that have posted have been in the hobby a long long time and to see something like this happen is quite a big thing considering most of them are quite strict with keeping things how they were.

I wonder Lafos, what is your honest point of view beyond it being a piece for some discussion, do you like it , hate it? Have no opinion?

HMMMM smells like stupidity to me  or is this like the winner of the biggest dick comp for nerds?
EITHER WAY IT'S ****ING SAD

Joe,

I commend you for having a mature response to my question.

I know the owner of this piece and Im sure he expected some good and bad press but at the end of the day the item is what is what it is. Its still a rare and unique piece. I think tho if people are going to go for the pitch forks every time they dont like whats being limelighted there will be less things getting limelighted which would be a down side to the forums.

To many people are to quick to flame others because they dont quite understand the logistics or mindset of other collectors. All these toys we cuvet were at some point destined to be opened and its just a bonus that some have been left behind for us to collect or open etc. There were no rules in the beginning stating that these toys should be kept or collected.

Again feel free to flame for having a middle of the road opinion.

No probs Grant I think we have both been there and done that on many other threads so there really is no point in starting wars any more over these AFA/U grade issues :)

As devils advocate again , do you think the owner would have named himself had the response been overwhelmingly in his favour?

If people were saying "That looks fantastic" " Good Job on a rare set" would he have been more happy to come forward or do you think he would still be our anonymous friend?

I agree as a MOC collector / lover its very sad to see near enough the rarest MOC's out there destroyed for the U Grade.

I also thing the fact that they were given 90's 95's by the AFA is very very fishy - Maybe super collectors can pay a private premium / backhander for the increased grade? Don't laugh it happens in other hobbies!!

Regarding the thread on RS i do understand a lot of the points and there was some really good interesting posts over there.

Its sullied a bit by the bitching and i cant work out why Dave Tree and Todd are fighting / snapping at each? there exchanges come across like schoolboy tit for tat:?:

I am still none the wiser as to what Ben Sheehan does

Someone said he is a fireman, is that an in joke?

Are they saying he is NOT in a position to own something like this or he IS?!? :?

Kind of. The owner appreciated my blog and told me he may have a rare piece I may be interested to show. I surely was interested and he sent me the photos.

1. This is a very nice & unique custom display by AFA.

2. It contains 3 very rare pieces of Kenner history.

3. If I were the owner of the carded DT Vader & Ben, I would have cased them carded by AFA in a big case without grading.

4. As everyone is absolutely free in doing with his owns things, what he wants to do, I can´t comment against the owner.

5. But I also accept other collector´s opinions, that he "destroyed" some kind of Kenner history. They´re also right.

I didn't work that out either Joe :?

He must do something to do with reading - I thought fireman was an in joke :?: :?:

Hey Joe,

Just to quickly try and answer what you had asked early.

I think the current owner of this set would have been aware of the very heated debates over Ugrades in general and didnt want to be getting flamed over having this set and I suppose why should he. I think he did a splendid job of preserving those figures and cards together all in one set. I also think it was a good move to limelight the piece because it is a great item to see especially for all the people who can appreciate looking at it.

Just to reiterate I totally understand both sides of the argument. Also I have had hundreds of items graded by AFA and its preposterous to think that they would make up the grades for ANY one. If its a 90 or a 95 then it really is a 90 or 95. Id personally love to see this piece in person just to see how minty that figures look. I bet they are absolutely stunning.

Thank you,

Grant. 8)

Like Grant I understand why this was done but I just disagree with it all, taking figures off cards for a 'u' grade is nuts. But there again I'm a MOC collector so I would think that wouldn't I?

If the owner wants to remain anonymous that's their business, can't say I'm bothered who it is TBH.

God the same thread on RS is heavy going

It's turned into a royal rumble on RS, there seems to be now 4 or 5 different arguments and many more people arguing with other people!

It's fun to watch !

Still think RS discussions are good regardless of how many people don't like it over there, you learn something, you hear some nicely constructed arguments AND you get to see a few trolls pop up and get whack a moled! LOL

Joe,

I've been following the thread on RS and have been in stitches at some of the arguments going on.I agree though there are some very well informed people and you do get an in depth insight into the discussion at hand.

The vintage chat section hasn't had less than 10 viewers all day lol

It's at 21 at the moment :D

Good fun nonetheless, like I said most of the arguments are very valid, its one thing to chuck in a couple of ROTJ Klaatu's for U grading but its just a completely different ball game with some tradesman's sample MOC DT figures .

They survived so long just fine and probably would have been fine in their bubbles/original packaging for another 20 + years if taken care of but now , apart from them being encased with the packaging, they are really not what they once were.

The subject and discussion although is great to read through and see all the opinions over this will not unfortunately undo what has been done :( that is the real shame in my eyes.
