U-Grade Ban: Include Mailing/Shipping boxes?

U-Grade ban should apply to:

  • Everything (MOCs, baggies, mailers, shipping boxes etc)

    Votes: 17 39.5%
  • Only MOCs/Baggies

    Votes: 26 60.5%

  • Total voters
    43
I knew it would be a can of worms, hence the poll :) Don't worry I'm not on a crusade to ban everything so as per the other poll I would only ban all U-grades if an over-whelming majority agree. At the moment that's not the way it's looking.

i voted for everything simply because what looks good is a matter of personal taste . It's a bit like being a vegetarian making an exception for ugly animals , who decides which animals are ugly ?

You want to try going out in Luton on a weekend, after a few beers even the animals look attractive.

i dont like u grade full stop BUT that is not to say i have any problems with opening mail away boxes as long as they stay in there baggies.
if u do want the mailer boxes opened at least get the pleasure of doing so your self IMO

We're all making a huge fuss about the newly found box of 12 backs going up for auction, but no ones complained about the shipping box being opened in the process!!

Actually that was one of the first questions some of us asked! If it was sealed I would have been in favour of not opening it personally.

But what of the history that can be documented by opening the box?
And the toys that can be appreciated by the collecting community?

Would you have been in favour of leaving Tutankhamen's tomb sealed?
Look at the millions of people who appreciated the Egyptian culture inside and what has been learnt by opening that tomb...

Jason

That's a good point Jason but because King Tuts tomb would be better sealed - early archaeologists destroyed lots of important evidence through treasure hunting, and the general principal of archaeology today is to leave things preserved for future generations to investigate with less destructive techniques.

As to the sealed box - it's contents are less precious than a King's tomb, and a good record of its opening is a sensible way forward.

I don't see the need to keep it sealed, but to go the archaeological route no doubt future generations will have techniques to produce 3D colour images of the contents and who are we to open things now

Saying that I voted to allow U grading of mailers :)

I said it on the other thread. Not everyone collects for how things look, but for how they feel. A reseal moc has a totally different feel than a fully sealed original. Yet technically they look the same, and are the same except for some modern glue. Yet the it's the fact that the figure has never been touched or opened is the extra attraction. Same go's for a mailer in my opinion.

The more boxes that are split or mailers that are opened, the less there are for future collectors who want them sealed. If you want a baggie and box for display then buy a baggie and box instead of buying a sealed one and opening it.

There are numerous stories about collectors passing up bootlegs and foreign items for cheap because they were not appreciated at the time or even concidered ugly. When it comes to collectibles you always have to keep in mind that you are also preserving something for the next generation to enjoy and taste changes over time.

But guys, this is not a vote to find out if you think UGraded mailers look good or even if you think anyone should UGrade a mailer. Or on the aesthetic values of different UGrades in any way. It's to decide whether as a forum we should morally oppose and ban them. So the vote's been a bit skewed if that's what people are voting on. :?
What people are suggesting is that by opening a mailer or a carton of MOCs you are not actually damaging vintage Star Wars packaged toys but in fact are making it so the toy, in it's intended packaging can be seen, displayed and enjoyed.
While others are saying that the intrinsic value of the toys still in the cardboard box the suppliers put them in is the way they ought to be kept.

Sorry for the confusing post, i prefer the romance of either not opening a box/blind mailer or even opening it yourself to the perceived added value of someone else opening it for you. I would have preferred no rule at all but since there's going to be a rule against selling u graded moc 's and baggies it's only fair to apply the same rule to the rest of u-graded items.

Funny, i've been there for a wedding and noticed the same thing

I'll let this run over the weekend and then update the rules on Monday.

I'm loving this democratic forum, evan if it does mean opening can's of worms.

Thanks to all who voted, the rules have now been updated.
