Looking forward to this...hoping Bruckheimer does the classics justice..
Johnny Depp as Tonto is a bit weird, and it's Disney, but nonetheless... Hi Ho Silver!!!

Surely Lou Diamond Phillips would have been a shoo-in for Tonto 10-15 years ago !

Am i the only person sick to the back teeth of Johnny F***ing Depp??
Every role he does now has to be this wacky, clown-like, "ooh how weird am i" role. It got old about 8 years ago for me. A once very watchable and promising actor has become a rather tedious one now.
I'm sure most will dissagree but i had to vent.

Oh and Helena ****ing bonham carter...soon as I saw her in the trailer I decided to give it a miss.

I'm with you there. So over-rated. If it weren't for Tim Burton (and don't get me started on the **** he's been churning out for the best part of a decade) she'd have to make do with being in Eastenders or Casualty.

Seconded!

I think I will counter, if you look over Mr Depp's CV he does a mix of things and the rolls he takes that do play to a type fit with the film, PoTC, Dark Shadows, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, even Sweeny Todd, but also he then mixes it up with the likes of Public Enemy (cracking film), rum diary and the tourist (which is truly one of the worst films ever...)
I think the fact that PoTC is forever being shown on TV and is engrained in current pop culture it is hard to escape it.

Completely disagree. He mixes it up by playing 5 wacky roles in make-up to every 1 semi-serious regular role. It's ridiculous. Even doing half and half would be completely tedious.
Here's a list of his 'goofy', over-the-top, psudo-comedic, clown-like roles from the last 10 years -

Dark Shadows
The Rum Diary
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Rango
Alice In Wonderland
Sweeny Todd (this is basically the same character as Pirates and Sleepy Hollow with a little tweaking)
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Sleepy Hollow

And his non 'silly' roles (10 years worth!) -

The Tourist (arguably could go in the first list)
Public Enemies
The Libertine
Finding Neverland
Secret Window
Once Upon a Time In New Mexico (arguably could go in the first list)

It doesnt matter if Johnny Depp is playing Tonto, but giving someone playing Tonto the starring role in a lone ranger film is ****ing dumb.

A agree it is the Lone Ranger film and thus that should be the focus.
But on the Depp front, look at the source material for most of those films where he plays those 'wacky' characters, children's books, theme park rides and animation and a few very noir gothic pieces, they all call for an over the top performance to match the universe's they are set in.
Horses for courses as they say, personally I enjoy the whacky turns, but they are similar, no argument there.

No one's questioning the fact that those rolls all call for an over-the-top performance. The issue us it's always him doing them. Alwaaayyyys.
