The dangers of liberating figures from AFA cases!

Earlier today I removed a Luke Poncho MOC from it's AFA case. Had great fun; bits of acrylic flying off everywhere and at last the MOC was free.

Several hours later I try and print something. My printer acts up. After 20 mins I'm threatening to chuck it out the window. Another 40 mins later and this is the scene:

I locate the problem: A foreign object lodged deep within the paper feed mechanism:

Hmmm.... this looks familiar. Goddam AFA!!!

I've told collectors on here before, their's a much easier way to do this involving a sharp knife and sliding it around the gap at the bottom of the case. It cleanly removes the bottom of the case allowing the MOC to slide out. Funny story though.

That's f***ing too bloody funny. :D :D

I've had several occasions in my life when similar things have happened - trying to fix/remedy something ends up destroying it completely, or something else.

I've had mixed results as it goes... I've only cracked open 5 to date, but, with a ridiculously sharp knife in each case, I've had 3 come clean off with no problem and two that have cracked and shattered as the knife has either caught on an edge or the glue must have spilt beyond the joined edge I guess... Certainly does work, but for me, not every time.

I do wear my glasses rathe than lenses while doing it just in case!

When I open these things up I use a pair of pliers. I start in the little hole on the corner and nibble peices off with the pliers. It's a slow process but a bit more controlled. I use a watchmakers screwdriver to prise the plastic apart first.

The key is to do it as gently as you can and take your time.

There's something liberating about opening these cases up. I have one Afa moc to be liberated once my collection room is ready. A rather nice Spanish snaggletooth that looks like someone at Afa emptied the hoover bag onto it before sealing it in its case.

Sorry but that really did make me laugh out loud!

I did it once and it was a bit worrying how easy it came away, almost felt like I could have pulled it away with my hands. :? Don't wont to go into it to much as it could give the wrong people the wrong idea. :(

I've done a couple before - I've used nail varnish remover on the glue to soften it with a cotton bud, then a knife - so far they've opped right off without any fuss.

 funny story and well played for setting the fella free, now just got to break him out of that bubble  ..................................

Good idea

Submitted the printer. Came back a 30. Was mint at the beginning of the day.

Still, came away with a handful of spare parts. Always seems to happen when I take things apart.

That's funny as ****! Moral of the story, keep acrylic bothering well away from electrical gizmos. Ive had a moc out with a knife, no probs, slid it between the join as someone else said. More tricky when I did a couple of loose graded, they're more solid, less seam to work with. Cracked like a bastard :? Figure's weren't damaged though.

I have removed 2 figures from cases, the second one was real easy though, i put some scissors through the slot and instead of the bottom breaking the back started lifting and the glue loosened on the back and then i kept manoeuvring the scissors and the whole back of case was removed without damaging acrylic at all, this was not a carded figure though but a boxed figure where there were no rails
