Hi All,

So for the run up to Christmas I thought I'd set myself a task to build my son a scaled replica of the Palitoy Death Star. It's something I've been meaning to do for a long time now and I put all the scans together a few years ago when I saw a picture of one Nick McCarty had built that is in steve Sansweet's book ' Star Wars: 1000 Collectables'. I grew up playing with this playlet and even though I have an original one I've always found it a little too big to display so thought this would be the perfect way to fit it into my collection. As so much time has gone by now since first putting this project together I felt that with my young boy being a big Star Wars fan it would make a nice gift for him.

I only had time to complete the cardboard sections for him and will get around to making something for the gun turret and trash compactor chute at some point soon. I originally intended to scan my original ones and go down the Rapid Prototype route for these although this will have to wait for now and I'll see if I can find something else that will work as a stand in. Also for some reason I didn't have a scan of the front and back cover of the Palitoy catalogue that came with this playlet so made something up from the box artwork. Every thing has been scaled the same (58%), to fit in with the action fleet figures that I gave him with it.

It was a lot of fun to do but did end up using a fair few of my lunch hours, a small price to pay for the happiness on his face

I was tricked a bit by the scale as I scrolled through the pics, but the last pic pulled it all back together in my head

Thanks for the comments, I did think about playing a trick on everyone with the scale and showing some of the new Gentle Giant figures coming out this year using standard vintage figures but figured this was built for the lad and thought it was a fitting end to it all.

I'll probably build one more at some point for myself and get the plastic pieces made as best I can.

It really was my favorite toy growing up and my Cantina didn't even really get much of look in, which is probably why I still have it and it's the only Star Wars toy from my childhood that survived. I must admit that I'm slightly tempted by the toltoys one with the board game style box and thicker cardboard but I think my budget would only stretch to a lego one now a days.
