SWFUK Podcast

What an interesting idea, I would imagine a lot of work would be involved.
Whilst informative at times I do find Galaxy & Chivecast can descend into idle witterings for the sake of filling time

I wonder if it would detract from the amount of people that come on here though.
I know someone was talking about FB pages taking away viewers, would people just wait for the Podcast for all the news, etc rather than trawling numerous threads.

I'd actually think it would go the other way and encourage more posts on the forum. The podcast would be discussing the more interesting posts from the last month so hopefully more people would join in the discussions and post more stuff so that we were able to cover it on the pod.

I can see how Facebook pages detract from the forum as they are basically doing the same things but personally the Facebook pages I'm on aren't a touch on the forum and the forum would always be my go to place to post.

I listen to a podcast called the pokercast. It's a poker podcast that accompanies a forum (2+2).

They do it once a week, and are normally between 2 and 3 hours in length, sometimes more.

Poker is pretty visual. Don't underestimate the power of the spoken word. It's more or less like a radio show. That sort of informal chatter interspersed with news, comments and opinion and guests. Bits of strategy talk. Stories etc from the forums and results reports.

If you did it approximately monthly. I think you could fill 45 mins to an hour.

I think around the hour mark is a decent sort of length, some of the Chive cast podcasts are over 2 hours and it is sometimes hard going to get through it all. I'm a firm believer in leaving the audience wanting more so they come back and download the next podcast.

As for being visual I think Mr Shifter has hit the nail on the head, the spoken word is more powerful than you could imagine, it just needs to be done well. Any pictures that do need to be seen can been in a thread on the forum with show notes of the podcast (that's what a fair few podcasts do).

Also, a lot of vintage is about visual references, how does that translate to audio? What do other podcasts do?

Cheers Jason

You can do visuals with podcasts. The Marjorie and Arnie one is a visual podcast with images of all the stuff they are referencing as they go along. (having said that, I have a pc in the shed/warehouse and that doesnt seem to like itunes and the images stop after 30mins)

to me 45 mins of air time is a lot of air time to be filling.
Cheers Jason

45 mins to an hour is an acceptable time in the podcast world. I listen to plenty that are 30mins long and time soon flies. Shorter ones tend to disappear and most good ones can be 2hrs +. Afterbuzz network do tv show breakdowns and they can range from 30-60mins, the roundtable discussion is always a good feature of any cast. When I attended a gathering in the usa for a podcast party everybody enjoyed the fact that they would be doing other stuff whilst listening. You get a fanbase / listener base and they'll be chomping at the bit for more minutes.

I'd be happy to do the ebay research, I spend most of my waking hours on bidding sites of all sorts so could easily compile a number of interesting items per podcast. Obviously it would need to be for stuff that has sold or is freakshow enough to not be an issue for serious collectors. I also spend time annoying people on gumtree by telling them their stuff is not worth what they are asking, or correcting them on RARE or VINTAGE items... (i am such a dickhead)

Regards the comments around a pod driving traffic away from the site..... it was the chive cast that got me focused on Vintage and finally join the forums. It's a 2 way street.

It was me touting this last time. However, I couldn't present due to the amount if hours required to produce and my thick Dorset accent :)

But if you wanna go with this I am 100% behind it. I agree though, edd would have to green light this first.

And I would love to be on it. Not sure I have any expertise in any area mind you.

I think the Chive Cast gets better and better. There format and features are spot on. And Skye does bring a real sense of fun to the proceedings with Steven being his 'straight man'. The guys a legend. My only criticism would be its a little 'inner circle' heavy.

I would live to see this happen.

I have spoken with Edd and he had given the green light and will be the first interview on the opening podcast, so it's all systems go on this.

The first podcast will take a little longer to get out as we set up and work out which way were going to take the podcast but then we aim to have it a monthly cast.

want all forum members to be part of it, it'll be everyone's podcast and cover exactly what the forum members want.

This statement is wildly incorrect.

Edit: not into criticising other people's hard work, so I'm gonna delete.

But to those who enjoy it- good for you. I wish I could join in as I feel like I'm missing out.

May the Force.... :)

I mentioned this before, I'm the same as Grant on this. I stopped listening due to the presenters and the sub standard Paul's Boutique sound bites.

Personally I listen to Galaxy now but it's a matter of taste really and I only really have it on a bbackground noise at Work

Good luck on this though, they'll always be detractors but if it does get off the ground it's a commendable feat

I personally don't listen to Podcasts, but would be tempted in as this is SW :D

So forgive me for sticking my nose in, that's not my intention :?

So from a completely objective perspective, and " fresh eyes" or ears in this case from a complete newb perspective;

1. Would this be a general approach that would appeal to a broad range or would it be very specific very specific areas?
2. As per Grant and PC comments on other podcasts, the "in joke" aspect and clique would be a massive turn off for me.

There are a great number of reasons I love this forum, one of which is the way that vintage collecting facts are learned in a general discussion way, and the "inclusive" feel a newb gets from day 1.

I think what I'm getting at, is if the podcast had a general approach to SW Vintage collecting, with a light hearted yet informative approach on a varied number of areas, with spotlights on regular specific areas of collecting, but still replicating the ethos of the forum, I would be an avid fan and look forward to this developing, I appreciate a lot of hard work and time would be needed to set this up, so as always, to all that are to be involved in getting this off the ground, thanks and respect from me :D

Just my 2 pennarth :D

The Chivecast focuses on a vintage figure per week. Last week was Dengar. Skye and Steve put a lot into this and it's only natural that they deviate from SW time to time. I love hearing the stories of epic finds on road trips etc, and although I'm certainly not in the 'clique' I very rarely get lost in the who's who and what has happened kind of stories. Makes it more personal than a book for me.

I listen to The Chive Cast and Galaxy of Toys every month. I prefer the Chive Cast because its funnier. Skye just makes me laugh. Just find the Galaxy of Toys podcast a little .. well ... dull.

Sorry Grant :(

No- I cant- about 15 minutes in and its ****ing awful.

:(

About 25 minutes in: All I learn't enjoyed so far: The toy Galaxy film is apparently good. No reason given why.

News: FX-7 sold for £7000. No reasons given why except it was 'rare' and 'british'. Couldn't remember the website that published an article about it (bbc)

Free sticker roll on eBay: ok- but some analyse on what this means if it sales, or is cut up, or if it would effect prices on 12backs or 77 backs. Deserves more than a glaze. Hopefully this will be talked about more instead of 'Sky-cuz'.

Only 3 face parms and 2 cringes so far.

Its way to unfair to carry one this review. You get my point. I'm 30 minutes in to a 'audio magazine' and I have learn't nothing. Zero information, no references, no details. Just the sad news that a dog isn't feeling well.

This is really good critique IMO of how a podcast needs to appeal to its audience. Even though I'm a barely an amoeba in the vintage sw collecting world, the podcast agitprop is something we need to get to grips with. In the many podcasts I listen to very few appear to give indepth reasoning to the subtleties of peoples collecting; why they are collecting those lines; why prices are thus; what's out there. Eg I had no idea there was such a range of cards and varieties. I hear all these variants in conversations and I have to use a glossary to reference. Maybe that's something that gets covered.

Star Wars will be back in the public consciousness in a big way and it's up to the star wars uk forum to inform the world.. WE NEED TO RECLAIM THE EMPIRE*
