SWFUK Podcast - Episode 4: Shawn of the Jedi LAUNCHED

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the feedback. There is no offence taken at all I can assure you. We are still very much in our infancy as a podcast, and we are still batting around ideas and a few sections may be tweaked or changed in the coming months. We didn't really know what we were doing when we started to try to make this thing and I think all of the other guys will agree we are really learning as we go.

I think the main thing for me is that the podcast is evolving. Hopefully as we learn each one is getting better than the last, not just in terms of content, but in terms of audio quality, chemistry, editing, the whole nine yards.

One of the main drivers of our podcast, and an ethos that we are keen to carry on is that we are community orientated. We want to produce material on behalf of the SWFUK community that the community wants to listen to. Its not about us, its about the threads, stories and members on this forum. On this basis, its very important that we are producing content that the community enjoys. Feedback from the forum is essential, because it shapes how the future of the podcast will look. If you think something is working or not working, let us know. Praise is fantastic, and it still blows me away that you guys actually listen to our stuff, but critique is just as important.

I would really encourage everyone who has listened to the pod to let us know what you think works or doesn't work. Use the forum or the email address if you are shy, but let us know. without this feedback we are only guessing at what we are doing wrong and right. I know we won't be able to please everyone, but if we can get it 80% right for 95% of people I think we will do well.

The interviews sometimes run a bit long, but because of the ethos of the pod these are one of the most important parts of the pod. We want to get as many people on the pod as possible (hint hint Joe ;) ). This also seems to be one of the most popular parts of the pod.

The length of this one was excessive. It was due to farthest from I think, and has become a bit of a summer special per say. Would you believe Stuart cut 90 minutes of good usable audio from this thing to keep it to what it is. The uncut version would have been 6 hours long! I think we will settle back down to just the three or so hours next month. We will be consciously trying to be a bit more succinct. I would anticipate another long one happening again at christmas because we will all be meeting up again at farthest from.

Anyway, I will stop now otherwise this will turn into a ramble of podcast proportions. We listen to and act on all feedback and are having a debrief tomorrow evening so keep the feedback coming, and we will keep making these things.

Ben (The good looking one from the podcast)

I agree with you, criticism is a good thing. It's just every month the pod is released the only criticism that seems to be sited is the length.

Which is why I suggested more detail in the show notes so the listener could jump to parts of most interest to them.

It would be more work to add that detail in for them but I think it would help address the issue.

Cheers Grant and Ben, I'm glad you aren't upset with me

It'd be interesting for you guys to find out just how many listeners you get each month (not part time listeners like me obviously!) - what kind of data do you get from the sites you use to host the casts? If you can't get an idea of which visitors to the site are listening to the cast in full then maybe you could do an old fashioned vote thread on here to see what the score is?

I'd love to see you guys keep going with it, I really want that made clear, I think it's great that you've got this idea off the ground but as you've said it's important for you to find out what your audience is enjoying, what they aren't etc otherwise ultimately it could mean all this effort isn't reaching as many people as you'd like it to and that would be a real shame IMO.

I will try to catch up best I can with the previous shows, I think I'm going to try and see how long it takes me to finish the current one then report back!

Thanks again :)

Tell me about it. I have spent my life trying to deal with criticism about excessive length.

That's actually a very good idea and easy for me to implement

I enjoyed the show again, guys. I'm happy with the length ( and the girth ) as I've got a month to listen to it and most MP3 players resume from where you left off, even my cheapo almost-unbranded one.

:D

Ha! I knew it!.........

No I didn't, it was just a guess

Thanks for coming on the podcast Shawn. I LOVED it.

Make sure you keep starting threads, always seem to have a thread started by you in the forum roundup section

Listening now, good work guys :)

Edit - really enjoyed your interview Shawn!

Appreciate the interview guys. It was at the end of a long day and plenty of urrrrrmmmsss and arrrrrrrrrsss (difficult listening to yourself isn't it)

Apart from me, the podcast was excellent. I am onboard with the length. Nice to pause and come back to.

I really have no criticism to be honest. Audio was nice and balanced. Content was good and you guys seem to be getting in great.

Good work :)

Left you guys a review on itunes, to go along with the warm praise you have already given yourselves.

I was initially put off by the length of the pdcasts but now as a regular listener I realise they work really well. Just right for a half hr commute each way over a few days.

I'm only 40 mins in but so far a great start, INT 4 1st shots and Die Cast both being my thing :D

The main differences are that the production pieces have additional raised bars on each side of the wings and as Joe suggested you can see that a 1st shot (with stickers) is used in the box art rather than a production piece

These photos attempt to show the difference - on the first photo there are normally two ridges between the triangle and square on the wing and on the second photo there is normally a ridge above the square with a sticker. They are actually quite big differences.

Roger shows it much better in his FS thread

I like Boba's ideas on why stickers were placed on these, particularly the theory of checking sticker's place correctly but the stickers are no different from painting a first shot figure - Kenner needed to see how the final product would look.

I was another with Die Cast ships as a kid, my brother and I had the X-Wing, Landspeeder, TIE and Snowspeeder. I loved my TIE in the end the wings were held on with screws and its why I have a DC TIE focus today.

Another thing to note about the 'Empires largest ship' is that the same text appears on the back of the SW Falcon and Y-Wing - Kenner QA was ****

I'm not sure I've ever seen an ESB Landspeeder and wonder if they were dropped after SW. The scale of these never seemed right even as a kid.

Keep up the good work

It was me that suggested that about the stickers. People seem to struggle to differentiate between the two of us as we are the only two people on the pod that speak properly and don't sound like something that has come from north of castle black ;)

I was desperately struggling to spot the difference but now you have highlighted it its glaringly obvious. Are you saying that these first shots were also used for the box photos. That would make a lot of sense as these would have been the fresh of the new mould run so it would have been good preparation to get them photographed and the box finished for the product to go live.

It brings us back round to the whole debate about are first shots production or pre production. I am personally of the mind that they are, as they were never designed to be sold. The fact that they were still making design changes after the mould had produced the run of first shots for me just reinforces this. Not only was this one not sold, it is not the same as the final production piece. And its pretty cool that you have the reason why the ribs were added to strengthen the wings.

Glad you guys seem to be enjoying the pod.

Sorry Mr S - I'm not great with names it took me the first two episodes to realise that Pete wasn't the Pete G on here

This INT 4 I would definitely describe as preproduction because of the mould changes, and another collector owns the actual ship used in the photos. Same photo for every box variation

Regular first shots are more debatable - I have a Han Hoth first shot with painted legs and a square belt buckle and as such has to be a later issue. A result of replacement moulds after the first sets wore out or a new factory started up. No copyright or COO but definitely produced when production was in full swing.

Most production looking first shots will have a similar story but harder to tell where they fall in the time line. HH is easy as the first run of figures are moulded legs.

An interesting debate
